Patrick Swayze's friends and family reminisce about him in new doc: 'He'd find a way in and make you just fall in love with him'

The I Am Patrick Swayze trailer is out — and it will make fans smile and cry in quick succession.

“You’re only on this planet for so long,” a young Swayze says eerily as it starts before adding, “Go for it now.” That sets the tone for the two-minute trailer.

It’s bittersweet to see the iconic actor’s most memorable big-screen moments — the Dirty Dancing lift, the pottery scene in Ghost and skydiving in Point Break — play out again. Especially knowing this September marks 10 years since he lost his valiant battle with pancreatic cancer at just 57 years old.

In addition to his own archival interviews, his co-stars including Demi Moore, Jennifer Grey, The Outsiders’s Rob Lowe and C. Thomas Howell and Road House’s Sam Elliott and Kelly Lynch are among those to share recollections.

Moore described her Ghost co-star as being “rugged” but also “beautiful, gentle and sensuous” as a screen-mate. She also talked about how hard he worked, saying that “to be taken seriously, he needed to work harder” than everybody.

Lowe said Swayze, who played his big brother in Outsiders, always performed “like he had something to prove,” and ticked off all of his accomplishments — “a gymnast, a world-class cowboy, a ballet dancer... What Patrick accomplished in his life, very few people get to accomplish.”

Elliott recalled watching Swayze while they were working and thinking he was just “so good” while Lynch talked about how the late actor found a way to “charm everybody.” Lynch added, “He'd find a way in and make you just fall in love with him.”

Swayze’s wife Lisa Niemi, whom he married in 1975, is also interviewed, revealing the lows that went along with the highs. He’d be “bubbly and fun” with other people, but alone he’d “just crash.” She talked about how they had “so many challenging things to deal with” before adding, “but I still loved him.”

Roland Joffé also brought up the actor’s “innate loneliness,” while in Swayze’s own flashback interview, he talked about his “demons.”

The “raw courage” he displayed during his public battle with cancer was also discussed. Joffé said, “This was somebody who knew he was going to die but wasn’t making an issue about it.”

The film — which also features his brother Don, and interviews with his assistant, bodyguard and stuntman — will have its world premiere at the San Antonio Film Festival on Aug. 2 followed by its debut on Paramount Network Aug. 18.
