Patricia Barry Dies: Philanthropost And Three-Time Emmy Nominee Was 93

Patricia Barry, a prolific film and TV actress, three-time Emmy nominee and philanthropist who was a charter member of Women in Film died in her Los Angeles home October 11, surrounding by family and friends. She was 93.

Born in Davenport, Iowa, Barry attended Stephens College in Missouri and after a time spent on the stage, began her career in filmedentertainment as a contract player for Warner Bros after winning a Rita Hayworth look-alike contest acting under the name Patricia White. Among her credits in this period were Deception, The Beast with Five Fingers, and The Man I Love as well as Riders of the Whistling Pines with Gene Autry.

Barry also made hundreds of television appearances, among them Rawhide, Gunsmoke, The Donna Reed Show, Richard Diamond, Private Detective, Laramie, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Going My Way, Thriller, Route 66, Dallas, Columbo, Knots Landing, My Three Sons, and Perry Mason, among many others. Her most well-known television roles came from soap operas, including All My Children, Days of Our Lives, and Loving. She received three Emmy nominations, for roles on Dark Victory, Reunion, and The Wicked Scheme of Jebel Deeks.

In addition to acting, Barry was a charter member of Women in Film, a non-profit promoting equal opportunities for women in the industry. She was also a founder of the First Women’s Bank, founding President of the American Film Institute Associates, Vice President of the board of John Tracy Clinic, a member of the Women’s Committee of Screen Actors Guild and The Board of Governors of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. She also founded Women in Film International and served as Chairman of the WIF Foundation Board of Trustees. She served on the Boards of Stephens College; the Motion Picture & Television Fund, and the American National Theatre and Academy with Alfred de Liagre. And for many years she served on the Foreign Film Committee for the selection of Oscar nominees for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

She is survived by her daughters, writer and educator Miranda Barry, former Executive in Charge of global Sesame Street productions, and educator and consultant Stephanie Barry Agnew, by her son-in-law, Mark Agnew, her grandchildren, and godson. A private funeral is planned.
