‘The Path’ Not About Scientology Insists Creator – TCA
“I wanted to imagine my own,” creator Jessica Goldberg said of the cult at the center of her new HULU series about a family at the center of a controversial movement. “I wanted to invent my ideal faith. And then, of course, with any faith, there’s a dark side to it. I felt it would be too narrow, and wouldn’t allow us the same storytelling opportunities, if we put this into something that already existed,” when asked why she had not done just that.
She also dismissed a direct question as to whether the series is based on, or is about, Scientology. “The internet is full of misinformation,” Goldberg said, throwing shade at that questioner.
“I don’t follow anything…This show really came out of more personal experience for me a few years ago, when I had the double whammy of losing a parent and getting divorced in one year, and found my own little universe I deeply believed in. I felt like this is a world of shadows.” The Path, she said, is entirely the result of a “personal experience, and feeling that the frame of my life had crumbled,” in which you “wake up one day and the ground you stood on is no longer ground any more. That’s the leaping-off point for me.”
Besides, Goldberg said, “I grew up in Woodstock New York, which is a town that had tons of seekers and lots of crystal-y” residents.
The Path is from Universal Television and Jason Katims’ True Jack Productions; Katims exec produces along with Goldberg and Michelle Lee. Aaron Paul and Michelle Monaghan star. Cast also includes Hugh Dancy, Minka Kelly, and Rockmund Dunbar.
