Freshly minted Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Pat Benatar and Neil Giraldo kicked off their latest US tour (get tickets here) on Wednesday night at the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York. Forty-plus years into a legendary career, the married couple were in fine form at the sold-out show.

Taking the stage at 9 p.m. sharp, Benatar and Giraldo — along with drummer Chris Ralles and bassist Mick Mahan — wasted no time letting the audience know this would be a loud-and-proud rock show, dusting off the classic “Sex as a Weapon” to kick off the set.

Benatar, who mentioned onstage that she recently turned 70 years old, displayed a voice that sounded just as powerful as it did when she broke in the ’80s.

The rarity “Anxiety (Get Nervous)” also made its way into the set, followed shortly thereafter by an intimate rendition of “We Belong” in which Giraldo traded his guitar for a piano.

Other favorites included “We Live for Love,” “Promises in the Dark,” and “Shadows of the Night,” with Benatar telling little anecdotes about the songs’ origins. “Invincible” and “Hell Is for Children” were particularly powerful, as Benatar’s voice soared during the epic choruses.

Giraldo can still play guitar with the best of them, with Benatar proudly offering the spotlight to her husband on multiple occasions.

Of course, “Love Is a Battlefield” received a rousing response from the crowd. As one of Benatar’s signature hits, the tune still sounds as fresh as it did when it was released 40 years ago in 1983.

After briefly retreating backstage following the initial set, Benatar and Giraldo returned to launch the encore with a rousing cover of The Beatles’ “Helter Skelter.”

At one point during the encore, an asshat in the balcony screamed “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” at the top of his lungs, perhaps not realizing that Benatar retired the song last year “in deference to the victims of the families of these mass shootings.” With the recent tragic incidents in Nashville and Louisville, you can bet there was no way the singer was about to have a change of heart.

After playing “Everybody Lay Down,” Benatar and Giraldo closed out the show with an extended version of “Heartbreaker,” featuring a bit of Johnny Cash’s “Ring of Fire” worked into the performance. They were met with a standing ovation at the end of the song, a well-earned response for a superb set.

Singer-songwriter Chris Trapper opened up the evening, showcasing his heartfelt tunes while also telling amusing stories behind the songs. The journeyman musician is the singer in the band The Push Stars, and has also had a lengthy solo career, with a number of his songs appearing notable movies and television shows.

Benatar and Giraldo’s headlining East Coast jaunt continues through an April 29th show in Hollywood, Florida. After that, they’ll support P!nk on a run of shows beginning in late July. Tickets to their upcoming concerts are available are available here, while photos from the Port Chester show can be seen in the gallery below.
