Passaic fire damages three buildings, displaces residents

PASSAIC — Three buildings are uninhabitable and two residents were sent for treatment after a house fire spread to two other homes Sunday morning, according to the Passaic Fire Department.

The fire, reported at 9:15 a.m. Sunday, heavily damaged the home at 435 Harrison St., said Battalion Chief Adam Alberti. The blaze also burned the roof and second floor of one neighboring home, and caused "extensive" damage to the exterior and third floor of another, Alberti said.

The fire displaced the residents of all three homes, and Alberti said the occupants have been temporarily relocated. Volunteers from Red Cross New Jersey helped provide "lodging, food and clothing needs" to the families, according to the organization's Twitter page.

A resident of one home sustained a fractured ankle after jumping from the second floor, and an elderly woman was taken to the hospital after suffering shortness of breath, Alberti said. Several firefighters were also dealing with "minor" injuries, he added; one went to the hospital and was later released.

The fire was under control at 11:01 a.m. Sunday, Alberti said. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
