It’s Party Pony Season! Up Your Hair Game with Ashley Graham and Julianne Moore’s Looks

When it comes to zhuzhing up your hair during the holidays, it doesn't get much easier than a ponytail. Try these expert tips to elevate your look

In search of a holiday hairstyle that’s elegant and easy to create? Look no further than the ponytail.

Ashley Graham and Julianne Moore are among the most recent stars to wear the style on the red carpet. Graham and her hairstylist Anthony Perez topped off her Swarovski x SKIMS ensemble with the high, textured version of the style at a party for the brands’ collaboration on Nov. 7 in New York City, and the next day Moore rocked one courtesy of hairstylist Orlando Pita at the 2023 Creative Time Gala.

Says Pita, “A ponytail is extremely versatile. A low ponytail can look very chic and sophisticated while a high ponytail tends to look more fun and flirty. You can jazz up your look by adding fun and festive accessories to complement your holiday outfit.”

Ahead, both Graham and Moore’s pros tell PEOPLE how to get their gorgeous looks.

The model’s perky, pulled-back look provides an “uplifting and fun vibe,” says Perez.

The two picked it to ensure the “stunning” crystals on her neckline had their moment in the spotlight.

Graham's dramatic bang, with its deep, diagonal part, “balanced the long, playful ponytail,” Perez explains.

Using the right products was the key to creating a look that was both carefree and controlled. Big SexyHair Root Pump Volumizing Spray Mousse gave the base of the ponytail density and control,” Perez says.

For her sleek sides, the pro used a combo of R+CO Mannequin Styling Paste and the brand’s High Dive Moisture+Shine Crème. “I mixed both to smooth out the sides and give a clean shine line.”

A spritz of Kenra Perfect Medium Spray 13 fixed any flyaways.

Perez says to get this look with ease, it’s helpful to use your blow dryer — even if your hair is already dry —  to direct your hair where you plan to place the ponytail. That process will minimize any lumps and bumps when you then pull your hair up.

“The neckline of Julianne’s dress inspired the whole look,” says Pita. “I felt that having her hair pulled back would best suit the dress’s neckline. A bun would have looked too strict and formal [whereas] a ponytail felt fresh and youthful.”

For this “neat but effortless” style, Pita blow-dried Moore’s hair with Orlando Pita Play Atmos-Shield, a thermal heat protectant spray from the pro’s collection.

To help control the direction of your hair, the pro recommends misting your brush with a humidity-blocking hairspray such as his Orlando Pita Play Climate Change to keep it smooth. Then, he likes a polishing cream (Orlando Pita Play The Gloss Up) for controlling any flyaways.

And if your ponytail needs an extra-festive touch, add an accessory, Pita says. “Bows, sparkly barrettes or headbands can dress up the ponytail to make it look more festive.”
