Parkland drama students steal the show at the Tony Awards with emotional performance

On Sunday, The 72nd Annual Tony Awards honored the students and teachers of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. The kind gestures included sharing the stage with members of the school’s drama department who performed “Seasons of Love” from the musical, “Rent.”The show also awarded drama teacher Melody Herzfeld with the Excellence in Theater Education Prize. She was huddled with her students in a Marjory Stoneman Douglas classroom while the shooter roamed it’s hallways back on February 14th. “We all have a common energy. We all want the same thing,” Herzfeld said during her acceptance speech, which did not air during the CBS broadcast. “To be heard. To tell our truth. To make a difference. And to be respected. We teach this every day in every arts class.”The “Seasons of Love” performance put on by the students included a crowd-pleasing solo, and was capped off with a standing ovation from the star-studded audience. But perhaps nobody was more proud of them than Herzfeld, who watched on with a grin from ear to ear as her students held their own on theater’s biggest stage.Check out this a Parkland shooting survivor being honored on The Voice:
