Is 'Parasite' on its way to a Historic Best Picture Win at the 2020 Oscars?

Parasite is making quick history by racking up wins at Award shows. With its first win at the Golden Globes for Best Foreign Language Film, it became the movie to keep an eye on.

Shortly after, it took home Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG awards. This award is said to be a good prediction of who could win Best Picture at the Oscars.

Does this secure its win at the Oscars? Unfortunately, it's more complicated than that.

If you're unfamiliar with Parasite, which is likely, as it seemingly came out of nowhere, it was written by Bong Joon-Ho (Snowpiercer).

Parasite is a comedy/drama/thriller with the following synopsis, "All unemployed, Ki-taek and his family take peculiar interest in the wealthy and glamorous Parks, as they ingratiate themselves into their lives and get entangled in an unexpected incident."

Parasite is in Korean, and while it is showing at theaters in the US, it's subtitled. If subtitles are something that bothers you, this might not be the film for you.

However, as Bong Joon-Ho stated in his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes, "Once you overcome the one-inch-tall barrier of foreign language subtitles, you will be introduced to so many more amazing films."

So, what does all that really mean? Is Parasite a lock to win Best Picture at the Oscars this year?

It's completely possible. With two wins under their belt already this award season, they're gearing up to be a most-talked-about film this year.

However, more often than not foreign films are pushed aside into the Best International Feature category. Although its win at the SAG Awards concretes its chance for a win at the Oscars, it's not a lock.

Prediction website, GoldDerby has Parasite high up on the list of possible winners, just barely behind 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

It's safe to say that Parasite is still in the running. However, the combination of it being a foreign film as well a genre-diverse movie puts it lower on the ranking than we would like.

The Oscars tend to go for something more straight forward that sticks to one genre in its entirety. With Parasite filling so many genre boxes, we're uncertain if it'll win.

However, Best Picture win or not, it's still a fantastic movie that you should see right away. Hopefully you'll love it too.
