Paramount+ drops trailer for docuseries ‘Crush’ that premieres October 17, about devastating Halloween 2022 crowd catastrophe in South Korea [WATCH]

Paramount+ has dropped a trailer for the hard-hitting, two-part docuseries “Crush” that premieres on the streamer October 17 ahead of the first anniversary of the devastating crowd catastrophe in Seoul, South Korea that unfolded on October 29 of last year. Watch the trailer above.

“Crush” is described as “a spine-tingling account of what happened when a Halloween night of celebration turned into a nightmare.” More than 100,000 mostly young revelers who were packed like sardines into the narrow bar-lined alleyways of Seoul’s trendy Itaewon neighborhood became trapped in a mass panic. The toll was astonishing: 159 people, including two American students studying abroad, suffocated in the ensuing bedlam and died. Nearly all of those who perished were in their twenties.

From the co-producers of “11 Minutes,” the four-part docuseries about the mass murder at the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas,” “Crush” tells the tale of the Seoul tragedy in an immersive style, relying only on the voices of those who were either caught up in the crowd themselves or tried to respond and render aid as the unfathomable scale of the unfolding catastrophe became apparent. Told through the eyes of those on the scene, it uses raw footage, first-person accounts, real-time body camera video, surveillance video and cellphone footage to bring viewers into the crowd to experience the unfolding horror as chaos takes hold.

Among those interviewed in the series is an American student who convinced her roommate to go out to a bar for the first time and emotionally relives the night that would be her friend’s last. Two off-duty American soldiers describe who they pulled unconscious people from the crowd and struggled to save as many as possible. Also, a Korean illustrator who was buried beneath dozens of bodies discusses coming to terms with being partially paralyzed.

“Crush” also tackles disturbing questions that have rocked South Korea as victims’ families cry out for justice, accusing their government of being unprepared and slow to respond. Two mid-level officials committed suicide, but the country’s president and his cabinet ministers appear to be weathering the storm, bruised but clinging to power, nonetheless. The series is a shocking tale of fate and randomness, how the lives of strangers can intersect and the courage some people find in moments of crisis.

The series is produced by Triage Entertainment, All Rise Films and See It Now Studios. It’s executive produced by Emmy and Peabody winner Jeff Zimbalist, Stu Schreinberg, Susan Zirinsky and Terence Wrong.
