Panic in Austin as Drivers Struggle to Control Vehicles in Icy Conditions

Panic ensued in an Austin neighborhood on February 16 as drivers struggled to control their cars on an icy hill.

Footage captured by local resident James Bates shows out-of-control cars sliding down Oltorf Street, bumping into each other, or skidding towards pedestrians.

The record-setting wintry conditions in Texas were expected to continue on February 17, the National Weather Service said, with an overnight system “shaping up to be the worst of all the winter events over the past week.”

Bates told Storyful that no ambulances or police showed up. “Everybody walked away fine and there were no injuries,” but added that the vehicular skidding “was happening all day.” Credit: James Bates via Storyful
