UPDATED with latest winner: The Palm Springs International Film Awards said Thursday that House of Gucci star Lady Gaga will receive the Icon Award during the film awards gala next month that kicks off the Palm Springs Film Festival. The Film Awards will take place in-person January 6 at the Palm Springs Convention Center, with the festival running through January 17.

Lady Gaga, the Grammy-winning singer and Oscar winner, plays Patrizia Reggiani in Ridley Scott’s film about the Gucci family empire, centering on Patrizia’s unbridled ambition that begins to unravel the family legacy and triggers a spiral of betrayal, decadence, revenge, and ultimately murder. Adam Driver, Jared Leto, Jeremy Irons, Jack Huston, Salma Hayek and Al Pacino also star in the MGM pic.

“To many Lady Gaga is an icon through her music, but she continues to impress audiences with her iconic acting roles. Following her memorable performance in A Star is Born, Lady Gaga yet again raises the bar in her portrayal of Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci, the shocking true story of the family behind the Italian fashion empire,” said festival chairman Harold Matzner on Thursday. “For this tour-de-force performance, it is our honor to present the Icon Award to Lady Gaga.”

Past Icon Award recipients include Glenn Close, Willem Dafoe, Michael Douglas, Robert Duvall, Tom Hanks and Meryl Streep.

The news comes after Palm Springs awards organizers said that the cast of Warner Bros’ King Richard will receive this year’s Ensemble Performance Award, Actor. The prize will be presented to Will Smith, Aunjanue Ellis, Saniyya Sidney, Demi Singleton, Jon Bernthal and Tony Goldwyn on January 6 during the fest’s awards gala.

Previously announced winners this year including tick, tick…BOOM! star Andrew Garfield, Belfast filmmaker Kenneth Branagh and his cast, Respect star Jennifer Hudson (Chairman’s Award), The Eyes of Tammy Faye star Jessica Chastain (Desert Palm Achievement Award, Actress), The Power of the Dog‘s Jane Campion (Director of the Year Award) and Parallel Mothers’ Penélope Cruz (International Star Award, Actress) and Spencer‘s Kristen Stewart (Spotlight Award, Actress).

The fest is returning to an in-person event after the pandemic waylaid the festival and gala in 2021 (the annual awards were handed out, but the festival was canceled).
