Palm Beach Society: Gathering in the sculpture garden launches library into new season

Books and wine are the perfect marriage.

The Society of the Four Arts is the matchmaker and invited 400 people to the reception. They all showed up.

The Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden was the venue for the annual King Fling, the unofficial kickoff to the King Library's season.

The event, which took place on the afternoon of Nov. 3, included hors d'oeuvres, wine and beer, music by Bob Merrill, a barbershop quartet, and the chance to buy gently used, brand new and expertly curated art, history and coffee table books donated by Four Arts and King Library members.

It also included two walking tours of the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden led by docent Terry Ethier, featuring works "King Parrot," "Crispina Senior II," "Spade (magenta)" and "Diana"; and a wine raffle.

“The King Fling is an event that offers us the opportunity to celebrate the beginning of the season with the generosity of people who know the importance of libraries in their communities and who enjoy the arts," said Dr. Rachel Schipper, Four Arts’ director of libraries.

"Cultural appreciation enlightens, educates, inspires, and broadens creativity in our society. We appreciate everyone who attends and participates in the hundreds of programs available each season at The Society of the Four Arts.”

Proceeds from the sold-out event benefit the collection at the Gioconda and Joseph King Library, which houses more than 90,000 books, audiobooks, DVDs and periodicals. Book discussions, author talks, and teen and adult programs are presented regularly. The King Library serves the Town of Palm Beach but is open to library members from all over.
