Palm Beach Post picks for best sandwiches in Palm Beach County
Before we reveal three of our favorite sandwiches in Palm Beach County, let’s get the disclaimers out of the way. Our list does not include burgers, tacos, empanadas, hot dogs, pastelitos or any other filled food item, despite the perennial debates over what constitutes a sandwich.
No disrespect to a well-stuffed quesadilla, but a sandwich is a mighty thing on its own. It doesn’t have to borrow an identity. It’s bread, a filling that could be stacked in layers or thickly spread a la classic tuna or PB & J, and bread. Unless it’s a club sandwich, which would require another slice of bread.
Toast it. Grill it. Dip it in batter, Monte Cristo style. Bake it. Make it thin, like a tea sandwich or sandwich de miga. Or over-stuff it with a Dagwood-style stack. But leave the fork and knife in the drawer. A sandwich is meant to be hand-held. If you’ve made a sandwich that’s too unwieldy to pick up, bring out the napkins and dig in.
Here are our personal-favorite sandwiches in the county.
Chicken cordon bleu, Café Solé in Jupiter
For most of us, sandwiches come and go. Sure, there might be a favorite here and there, but then, "poof," the place closes, stops making it or you move away. That's just life.
Every now and then, however, if you're truly blessed sandwich-wise, there's one that stays with you. More than 10 years in this world? That's pretty special. More than 20? You've truly hit the sandwich lottery.
For me, I have my winning ticket and it's the chicken cordon bleu at Cafe Solé in Jupiter.
My love for this sandwich started back when they opened their first eatery off of Congress Avenue near Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard.
Though that shop eventually closed after they opened in the Bluffs Square Shoppes shopping center in Jupiter, my love for that sandwich, and their ability to make it excellent year after year, never faded.
Although it's hard to say over a 20-year span, but I'm sure I've eaten close to 100 of them.
I'll break it down for you: It's their house-made flatbread filled with tender grilled chicken, followed by thinly sliced ham and molten Swiss cheese, topped with their own, more spicy than sweet honey mustard and served warm.It's pure heaven.

Steak Bomb, Buccan Sandwich Shop in West Palm Beach
When celebrated Palm Beach chef Clay Conley opened a tiny, takeout sandwich shop at the side of his popular Buccan restaurant in 2014, he offered sensational simplicity. Simple as in quick service and a pared down menu of baguette sandwiches. Sensational as in house-made breads, chips and cookies and scratch ingredients. Now with two locations, the Buccan Sandwich Shop offers a menu that still poses this dilemma: what to order? Just about everything is equally tempting.
If you’re in the mood for a hefty, meaty sandwich that’s well stuffed without being unmanageable, let me suggest my favorite — the Steak Bomb ($17).
A fresh baguette holds a generous amount of finely chopped Prime New York strip steak, peppers, onions, cheese sauce, tomato and lettuce. A smear of smoked paprika aioli completes it. You can customize the sandwich to a point, except for the peppers and onions, which are always included. But when you order it as is you get the contrasts. The crisp lettuce balances the rich, cheesy steak. The onions and tomatoes lend sweetness to the savory bite.
You’ll want those house-made potato chips ($2) and, for dessert, one of Conley’s jumbo chocolate chip cookies ($4), which are finished with a sprinkling of sea salt.

L-Dub Subs’ Lake Quirky Club, Lake Worth Beach
When I think about sandwiches I love, my mind goes to our favorite neighborhood sub shop in Lake Worth Beach and the image of my 12-year-old son Jameson ordering his favorite, super-stacked sub. So the Lake Quirky Club ($10.25 for 8 inch), the sandwich that never fails to bring him joy, would have to be my favorite.
What is it about the Lake Quirky Club at L-Dub Subs that he loves so much? Here’s his description:
“Why do I love it? All the flavors work so well together. It’s dressed with ham, turkey, roast beef, bacon, Monterey Jack cheese, honey mustard, lettuce and tomatoes. You can have it toasted or cold. I like mine toasted. And their sauces make it extra special. I get mine with Dayonnaise, which the owner (Danny Clanton) makes with mayo, roasted garlic, rosemary and basil. And to kick it up, I get it with roasted red peppers and his spicy Contraband sauce.”
It’s not just the sub that always brings us back to L-Dub Subs. There’s a sense of community there and true hospitality.
“As soon as I open the door, I’m greeted by name,” says Jameson. “Clanton or whoever is behind the counter, usually asks if I’m having my normal … and, of course, I always respond with a resounding ‘yes!’”
