When the competition started, Bookout said, "When I watch this show the one thing that drives me crazy is people quit way too early. Like, they don't even give themselves a chance. The first sign of distress, they tap out, like, they're done." With a bit of bravado she added, "I mean, it's going to suck, for sure, but I'm not going to quit."
Bookout only made it a short distance into the jungle before realizing the ground was covered in thorns and cactus needles. Bookout struggled while hiking through the terrain in her bare feet. She ultimately had to be carried by her partner, Justin.
Bookout started a campfire and the pair put together a rudimentary platform to sleep on. But Bookout struggled throughout the evening, trying to get comfortable.
The next morning Bookout's mood had soured and she admitted, "Everything sucks. Everything hurts -- physically, mentally, everything hurts. Sitting on your couch watching this show is not the same."
Bookout decided to cut her losses and leave the challenge. Bookout said, "Coming into this, I 100% was confident in myself, but it's easy as a fan to say that because you don't feel like you're standing in a f***ing fire because you feet hurt so bad."
As the show aired, Bookout tweeted, "Naked and Afraid was the most amazing (and painful) experience.. even though I didn't complete the challenge. I am proud of myself for trying something completely terrifying and out of my comfort zone."
Naked and Afraid airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on Discovery Channel.
