Paddington is moving from the screen to the stage.

The long-adored bear is set to appear in Paddington: The Musical (working title), a musical adaptation of the original Paddington books written by Michael Bond. Inspiration will also be taken from the iconic Paddington film series produced by Studiocanal and Heyday Films, and directed by Paul King, who also directed the upcoming Wonka film.

The U.K.-based musical, set to premiere in 2025, is being developed by Sonia Friedman Productions, Eliza Lumley Productions and Studiocanal.

“It is a privilege to be creating a new musical about this gorgeous and beloved little bear with such a wonderful team,” Friedman and Lucy said on Tuesday in a joint statement.

They added, “The magic of Paddington is that, through his wide-eyed innocence, he sees the very best in humanity, reminding us that love and kindness can triumph if we open our hearts and minds to one another. We cannot wait to bring Paddington, his antics, adventures and mishaps with the Brown family, and Michael Bond’s other treasured characters to the stage. We hope to inspire audiences of all ages with fun, beauty, joy, and all that Paddington stands for.”

To ensure the musical is up to par, Tom Fletcher from English pop band McFly has been recruited to write the music and lyrics, along with award-winning playwright Jessica Swale, who will write the script. Luke Sheppard, the director of one of Broadway’s latest hits, & Juliet, is set to direct.

“We could not be more delighted to see our beloved Paddington take to the stage shepherded by a talented and visionary team in Sonia and Eliza,” Studiocanal CEO Anna Marsh said. “They have opened their hearts to show a deep understanding and passion for Paddington that will no doubt transpire on stage and ensure that his adventures, created by Michael Bond over 60 years ago, continue to charm audiences in such a new and innovative way.”
