'PacMan' Sun Greets Early Risers in Maryland During Eclipse

Skywatchers across the northern hemisphere had the chance to see a partial eclipse of the sun on June 10.

The phenomenon is also called an “annular eclipse,” NASA said, during which the moon “is far enough away from Earth that [it] appears smaller than the sun in the sky.”

Parts of Canada, Greenland and northern Russia could expect to see a “ring of fire” in the sky as the moon blocked the sun.

Farther south, however, the effect would be more partial. Israel Joffe, in North Bethesda, Maryland, likened the effect to the computer game character Pac-Man. Credit: Israel Joffe via Storyful
