Pablo Escobar was a Colombian drug lord, narcoterrorist, and politician who was often called “the king of cocaine”. Furthermore, he was the founder and leader of the Medellín Cartel. At the height of his power, Escobar became one of the wealthiest criminals of all time. By the time of his death, his net worth was US$30, which is equivalent to $70 billion in today’s day and age.

Pablo Escobar died on December 2, 1993, after coming face-to-face with the Colombian National Police. A day before his death was his 44th birthday. According to Biography, when Escobar tried to escape across a series of rooftops, the police shot and killed him and his bodyguard. This entire incident transpired in a middle-class neighborhood in Medellín, Colombia.

The Netflix show titled Narcos elaborately showcases the rise and fall of Pablo Escobar and his massive drug empire. According to Rotten Tomatoes, the synopsis of the series reads, “Netflix chronicles the rise of the cocaine trade in Colombia and the gripping real-life stories of drug kingpins of the late ’80s in this raw, gritty original series. Also detailed are the actions taken by law enforcement as they battle in the war on drugs, targeting notorious and powerful figures that include drug lord Pablo Escobar.”

It further reads, “As efforts are made to control cocaine, one of the world’s most valuable commodities, the many entities involved. Legal, political, police, military and civilian — find themselves in conflict.”

Pablo Escobar’s family and relationships

Pablo Escobar married María Victoria Henao in March 1976. At the time, Escobar was 26 years old, while Maria was 15 years old. Together, they had two children: Juan Pablo and Manuela.

Juan Pablo has changed his name to Sebastián Marroquín. He currently resides in Buenos Aires with his wife and son. Furthermore, he is an architect by profession.
