'Ozark' spoilers: What happens to Marty, Wendy and Ruth in the bloody series finale?

Spoiler alert! The following story contains details from the "Ozark" series finale, "A Hard Way to Go."

"Ozark" sure went out with a bang – literally.

Since the dark, gritty crime drama premiered on Netflix in July 2017, fans have watched Marty and Wendy Byrde (Jason Bateman and Laura Linney) fall deep into the pocket of a ruthless drug cartel, launder massive sums of cash and cover up murder – among other nefarious deeds.

So it shouldn't be too much of a surprise that not every seedy character could make it out alive in the series finale, which dropped Friday along with the other final six episodes of Season 4.

Here's what went down, including who lives, who dies and whether or not the Byrdes flew the coop out of the Ozarks once and for all.

What happens to fan favorite Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner)?

Throughout the five-year run of "Ozark," Julia Garner has cemented her character, the shrewd Ruth Langmore, as a favorite among fans and critics, earning two Emmys for best supporting actress in a drama series in 2019 and 2020.

If Ruth is going to get killed off, you know she’s getting killed off in dramatic fashion.

And that's exactly what happens in the series finale. Just as everything seems to be going smoothly for the Byrdes, Camila Elizonndro (Veronica Falcón) – the sister to drug lord Omar Navarro – has one last piece of business to take care of.

In front of Marty and Wendy at their casino, Camila confronts Clare Shaw (Katrina Lenk) about the death of her son Javi Elizonndro. Under pressure – and graphic threats from Camila – Clare confesses Ruth killed Javi after he killed her cousin Wyatt.

Camila then sets her sights on Ruth, telling Marty and Wendy that "if you warn her, if I even sense someone is following me, I’ll kill all of you," including the couple's children.

As Ruth is driving home from the casino that night, she spots a parked black van. She approaches it slowly and says "Hello?" (because that's always a good idea...). She discovers the driver's seat is empty.

Then, in oh-so-dramatic style, Camila emerges from the woods, gun in hand.

Ruth immediately knows what's about to happen – and delivers some last words befitting the foul-mouthed fan favorite.

"I’m not sorry," she says, before Camila kills her. "Your son was a murdering bitch. And now I know where he got it from."

Omar Navarro falls victim to a double-double cross

Ruth wasn't the only major character death. Drug lord and series villain Omar Navarro (Felix Solis) also met his demise, after two back-to-back twists.

During a supposed prison transfer, Omar is driven in the back of an FBI van by two men in police uniforms. The driver pulls over, saying he needs to urinate, but ends up walking over to the passenger side and shooting the other cop. He opens the door for Omar and hands him a gun, telling the mob boss a car a half-mile away will take him to a plane.

Omar takes a few paces, then stops, realizing something fishy is going on. He turns around to find the man who let him out of the car is aiming his gun at him. Omar points the gun he was handed at the man and pulls the trigger... but the gun is empty.

Then the man shoots Omar.

The apparent moral of the story? Don't trust hardened murderers, even if you are one.

Do Marty and Wendy Byrde die?

Of course, the main question on every "Ozark" fan's mind going into the finale is: What happens to Marty and Wendy Byrde?

The bulk of the finale is spent following the criminal power couple as they plan to leave the Ozarks with their kids Jonah and Charlotte (Skylar Gaertner and Sofia Hublitz). But the family doesn't get away so easily.

In the final scene of the series, the couple are confronted at their home by Mel Sattem (Adam Rothenberg), a private investigator looking into the disappearance of Wendy's brother Ben. (To catch up: Wendy had Ben killed in Season 3, when it became clear he posed a risk of exposing her family.)

Mel holds a goat-shaped jar containing Ben's ashes and tells the Byrdes he has all the DNA evidence he needs to send them to prison.

Wendy and Marty offer to pay him any sum of money he wants – but Mel, one of the few characters with a moral compass, isn't interested.

"You don’t get it, do you. You don’t get to win," he tells the couple. "The world doesn’t work like that."

Maybe it does. Because just as Mel finishes his speech, Jonah and Charlotte emerge, with Jonah aiming a gun at Mel. The screen cuts to black — and we hear a gun shot before the credits roll.
