The actor, who just announced his role as 'Chief Shampoo Officer' for the brand, gives PEOPLE the first look at his hilarious new commercial

Owen Wilson just landed a new role and he has his hair to thank.

The actor, 55, is the new “Chief Shampoo Officer" (yes, that’s his official title!) for hair and body care brand California Naturals (he's also an investor and advisor).

“I’m excited to weigh in on everything from the product pipeline (happily lending myself as a guinea pig for new formulas) to campaigns and bigger decisions about the company’s growth," Wilson tells PEOPLE of his role.

“We are so thrilled that Owen is a fan of our products, and having him involved with the brand in a bigger way is a dream come true, as we feel he perfectly embodies the laidback, approachable spirit of California Naturals (and not to mention his great hair!)," says brand founder Shelby Wild.

To launch the partnership, Wilson shot a hilarious GRWM-style commercial in which he shares his hair routine and hangs out with dog Waffles (more on him below).

We spoke to Wilson about the partnership, the challenges of being a natural blonde and his hair’s dream role.

What made you want to work with California Naturals?

It’s actually my first time endorsing a brand here in the US, and I guess we can't take that decision lightly. I think people like a product that does what it says it’ll do, and a brand that’s doing good things and is led by good people. And luckily California Naturals has all of those qualities. Becoming a hair influencer was not necessarily on my career wishlist, but I’m proud to add it to my CV.”

You have some of the best hair in Hollywood — we’re surprised you haven’t been tapped for a hair campaign before!

I'm flattered, thank you. And yeah, it does sometimes feel like my hair enters a room before I do... plus you add the expectation of blondes having more fun... and we're talking about a lot of pressure on your shampoo and conditioner. Fortunately, California Naturals embraces that challenge and always seems to get the job done.

You and your hair have starred in many movies. Does your hair have a dream role?

I suppose doing Hair on Broadway would be its dream role. And to be honest, my hair and I don't always see eye to eye on our career. I wanted to do Wedding Crashers, but my hair was really holding out to do a remake of Shampoo

Have you seen Paint yet? The wig they created for that film is a work of art and really helped me get into character, but I’m not sure anyone will go racing to the salon asking for a perm to recreate it. I’d also say Zoolander was a career hair high, as far as its performance out-shining my own. It’s interesting to look back and see how the creative direction from stylists can really lend itself to a role: The slicked back look in Grand Budapest Hotel, the buzz cut in Bottle Rocket. Hats off to these pros who can essentially create a costume with a comb!

Have you ever had to dye it for a role and what was that experience like?

Going gray (with the help of a wig) for Loki was definitely an experience, and one that I’m sure I’ll live out in “real life” at some point – for better or worse!

Do you prefer blow-dry or air-dry?

If I’m not on set, it’s an air-dry day. Anything else is out of my skill set and is best left to the professionals.

When you get your hair done for a red carpet, what’s your directive to the stylist?

“Surprise me.” Wait, no. Don't surprise me. Actually, just read my mind. Which means hopefully the end result resembles my hair on a “normal day,” i.e. letting the strands fall where they may.

We love that your dog Waffles is in the commercial. What made him qualified for the role?

My dog is the star of the commercial! He (and I) wouldn't have it any other way. He has a good nose for great scents and loves the bergamot and eucalyptus [formula]. He gives it two paws up.
