The Oval Season 5 Finale Ends in Gunfire — Who Didn’t Survive?

Less than a week after President Biden delivered his latest State of the Union Address in real life, the POTUS and FLOTUS of Tyler Perry’s The Oval made a few declarations of their own on Tuesday’s Season 5 finale. And how are things going at the White House, you ask? As the great philosopher Dorinda Medley once said, “Not well, bitch!”
Heading into the season’s final hour, Hunter and Victoria’s relationship was already at an all-time low, which is saying a lot considering we met this couple mid-fistfight on the night of his inaugural ball. But if there’s one thing we’ve learned from this show — besides that Perry’s understanding of a president’s duties is dubious at best — it’s that things can always get worse.

It took 30 full minutes for the Franklins to finally come face to face, but it was well worth the wait. The first family reunion was between Victoria and Jason, the latter of whom made sure to kick his mother in the stomach while escaping his captor’s custody. Something about Jason going straight for her womb felt poetic, and we all know that this show is nothing if not poetic.
Hunter received a slightly warmer reception from his son, but only because he promised Jason protection from Victoria’s father, who apparently knows that Jason was responsible for his grandmother’s death. Kudos to Perry for even bothering to mention that unresolved storyline. We’d totally forgotten about it.
But in typical Oval fashion, the meat of the finale was saved for the final 10 minutes. And even more typically, we were left on a frustrating (dare we say disappointing?) cliffhanger. After failing to reach any sort of agreement between their two sides, Hunter ordered his mercenaries to open fire on #TeamVictoria, resulting in a scenario not unlike Game of Thrones‘ infamous Red Wedding. Actually, it was more like Dynasty‘s equally infamous Moldavian massacre, in that we doubt anyone of consequence will actually catch a stray bullet.
That said, nearly every major character — Hunter, Victoria, Jason, Donald, Kyle, Eli, Simone, Sam, Max, Bobby, Richard and Priscilla — was present for the dramatic turn of events, which means any one of them could technically get caught in the crossfire. The only confirmed casualty at this point is Richard and Nancy’s marriage.
