The epic historical battle drama film Outlaws – For Greater Glory, also titled For Greater Glory: The True Story of Cristiada, was released in 2012. It is based on the events of the Cristero War and shows the violent crackdown against the country’s Catholic faithful by newly elected Mexican President Plutarco Elías Calles, which led to the outbreak of a civil war.

The movie is a heart-melting story of unshaken belief and unbroken courage, of what it is to look into the eyes of death and resolutely defend faith. The plot is set during 1926-1929 in Mexico, depicting the carnage by showing Catholic priests being assassinated, churches being set on fire, numerous faithful peasants being massacred, and their bodies being publicly hanged on telegraph poles as a warning to others.
The story then shifts to a 13-year-old boy who witnesses a Catholic priest, who is ruthlessly murdered by the Federales. Driven by love for his faith and anger against the injustice and the atrocities committed, he joins the rebels, the Cristeros “soldiers for Christ,” fighting against Calles.
The film is directed by Dean Wright and written by Michael Love, based on the true events of the Cristero War. The main cast includes Andy García as Enrique Gorostieta, Eva Longoria as Tulita Gorostieta, Mauricio Kuri as José Sánchez del Río, Peter O’Toole as Father Christopher, and Oscar Isaac as Victoriano ‘El Catorce’ Ramirez.
