The rest is still unwritten for Outlander, at least if Sam Heughan has anything to say about it.

Amid the exciting announcement that the Starz series was renewed for another run, news also broke that season 8 marks the end of Claire and Jamie's love story as we know it. All that led viewers to wonder what it means for Diana Gabaldon's two books left untouched — Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone and an untitled tenth novel. Among those confused was one fan who voiced their concern on Twitter and in a surprise twist, Sam didn't stay silent.

"So the TV production will end, and the story will continue with DG’s book 10 (or more) published at some later date?" they asked. Sam, himself, then responded with the praised hands emoji, seeming to confirm the statement.

Convinced his open-ended message meant more, Outlander fans attempted to decipher it and replied with theories. "I spot a possible follow-up movie of book 10 later on, should the stars align and your schedules allow it," one person wrote under Sam's tweet. "Here’s an idea: Movies for books 9 and 10 😏," another added. "Who knows what the future will bring," a different person said.

Neither the cast nor the showrunners have hinted at a potential film, but Caitriona Balfe told Digital Spy in February 2022 that she predicted Claire and Jamie's story will end with a "Romeo and Juliet moment."

She added: “I don’t think one can survive without the other, and I don’t think Claire will leave him at all. Nobody is eternal, so at some point, someone is going to have to croak it so they might as well do it together!"

Sam, on the other hand, reportedly knows his character's fate after asking Diana how the series ends. “I think she has told Sam something about his character, but then I think he is just really nosy and he badgered her!" Caitriona told the outlet. "I’m quite happy to let the mystery live, and just find out when I need to find out.”

When asked in a different Digital Spy interview how he envisioned Outlander's conclusion, The Spy Who Dumped Me star answered that he wanted a "quiet life" for Jamie and Claire.

"He wants to be surrounded by his family and his loved ones and wants an easy time," he said to the publication, keeping things vague. "I would like to see him in his rocking chair, with Claire by his side, with his family ... and some good whisky."
