Outlander casts adult William Ransom, Jamie's son

The Outlander cast is expanding once more. On Thursday, Starz announced casting for a key season 7 role, that of William Ransom, the adult version of Jamie's (Sam Heughan) love child and adopted son of Lord John Grey (David Berry).
Charles Vandervaart (Lost in Space, The Craft: Legacy) will step into Willie's shoes, now donning the red-coat uniform like Lord John.
The character of William is one highly anticipated by fans of the novel, as he comes to play a key role in the lives of the Frasers in author Diana Gabaldon's later Outlander novels. Vandervaart has already joined the cast on set, as production on season 7 began in Scotland last month.
"We are happy to welcome Charles to the Fraser family for season seven of 'Outlander,' joining the cast with the other talented actors that bring our stories to life," said Matthew B. Roberts, showrunner, writer and executive producer. "Scotland will again be our production home as the Frasers and MacKenzies try to make a home against the backdrop of the Revolutionary War. This season promises more adventure, time travel and emotional peril than any season before."

When we pick back up with William (who was played as a young boy by Clark Butler and Oliver Finnegan in seasons 3 and 4 respectively), he comes to Wilmington eager to fight for the British Army and defend the American Colonies from the growing tensions amongst the rebels. As Jamie's secret son, William possesses hidden depths of his father's signature fire. But to all outward appearances, he's a high-minded aristocrat and the ninth Earl of Ellesmere.
"The character of William Ransom is a wonderful role," said executive producer Maril Davis in a statement. "And one fans have been eager to see. Finding someone with the talent and physicality to play Jamie's son was a daunting task, but Charles' charisma was evident during the audition process and we are excited to see what he will bring to William's multi layered journey."
The return date for season 7 of Outlander has yet to be announced. Season 6 concluded on Starz on May 1.
