OU football: Heritage Hall's Gavin Freeman decommits from Texas Tech to become preferred walk-on with Sooners

Heritage Hall's Freeman headed to OU

Heritage Hall wide receiver Gavin Freeman announced Sunday on Twitter that he is headed to Oklahoma as a preferred walk on.

Freeman had committed to Texas Tech, but he decided to make a dream come true and play for the Sooners. Heritage Hall has a signing day ceremony on Wednesday.

He accounted for 2,257 all-purpose yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior.

Heritage Hall receiver Gavin Freeman already drew many comparisons for former Chargers star Wes Welker. Freeman committing to Texas Tech has only added to the conversation.

Northern Iowa slips by No. 21 OU

Northern Iowa completed a sweep of ranked wrestling teams Sunday, beating No. 21-ranked Oklahoma 17-15 in Norman. On Saturday, Northern Iowa trimmed No. 4 Oklahoma State 19-15 in Stillwater.

OU (6-5) had a chance to win over the final two weights, trailing 17-9. The Sooners' Jake Woodley (197 pounds) and Josh Heindselman (285) won their matches — but only by 3-point decisions.

Canada beats U.S. in men's World Cup qualifier

Canada beat the United States for just the second time in 37 years, a 2-0 victory Sunday on goals by Cyle Larin and Sam Adekugbe to take another big step toward reaching the World Cup for the first time since 1986.

The U.S stumbled on the road for the fourth time in five qualifiers but remains on track to return to the World Cup if it wins its remaining two home games.

Vikings interested in Jim Harbaugh

Jim Harbaugh and the Minnesota Vikings had an exploratory conversation about the team's head coaching vacancy Saturday, a person with knowledge of the process told The Associated Press.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the team was not publicizing the interview, said both sides were gauging interest. The Vikings made the formal request earlier this week to speak with him.

A message seeking comment was left with Harbaugh, whose seventh season at Michigan ended last month with a loss to Georgia in the College Football Playoff.

Harbaugh, who is currently the head coach at Michigan, had been linked this offseason to the Miami Dolphins, the Chicago Bears and the Las Vegas Raiders.

RAIDERS: Las Vegas is finalizing a deal with New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to make him head coach, according to multiple reports. The Raiders are also hiring Patriots director of pro personnel Dave Ziegler as general manager, per reports.

McDaniels, 45, first became a head coach for the Denver Broncos in 2009. His tenure was short-lived, however, as he was fired just 12 games into his second season after compiling a 11-17 record in his career.

No. 6 Purdue trims No. 16 Ohio State

Jaden Ivey hit a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 0.6 seconds left and No. 6 Purdue fended off a late charge from No. 16 Ohio State for an 81-78 victory Sunday.

The Boilermakers led by 52-32 with 14:35 left in the game, but the Buckeyes methodically fought their way back and finally tied it at 78 on E.J. Liddell's 3 with 25.3 seconds to go.

NO. 11 WISCONSIN 66, MINNESOTA 60: Johnny Davis scored the game’s final six points and finished with 16 to go along with a career-high 15 rebounds as No. 11 Wisconsin outlasted Minnesota on Sunday.

NO. 1 SOUTH CAROLINA 62, FLORIDA 50 (WOMEN): Aliyah Boston had 13 points and a season-high 19 rebounds for her 14th consecutive double-double, and top-ranked South Carolina beat Florida on Sunday to extend its winning streak to eight. South Carolina is 20-1.

Castroneves wins Rolex 24

Helio Castroneves climbed the fence for the third time this calendar year Sunday after earning another crown jewel victory, this time a second consecutive win in the Rolex 24 at Daytona. The Brazilian closed out the race for Meyer Shank Racing, the team that helped him win a record-tying fourth Indianapolis 500 last May.

Castroneves in the No. 60 Acura held off Ricky Taylor over the final hour of the twice-round-the-clock race — an ironic close because Castroneves won his first career Rolex watch 365 days ago as Taylor's teammate in the No. 10 Acura.
