Adapted from Zakiya Dalila Harris’ bestselling novel, the series centered on Nella (played by Daniel), an editorial assistant who was tired of being the only Black girl at the fictional publishing house Wagner Books. She was excited when Hazel (Riverdale‘s Ashleigh Murray) was hired, but spiraled following a series of microaggressions that occurred just as Hazel’s star began to rise.

Nella then uncovered a sinister plot involving Hazel, who was revealed to be recruiter for a secret cult led by Nella’s book idol Diana Gordon (Garcelle Beauvais), who used a special hair grease to brainwash Black women into assimilating in white society.

The season finale — now serving as a series finale — saw Nella attend a staff meeting with straightened hair instead of her natural afro, suggesting she assimilated. However, a subsequent phone call to resistance allies Malaika (The CW’s 4400 reboot vet Brittany Adebumola) and Kendra Rae (Bel-Air’s April Parker Jones) alluded to Nella working to bring the organization down from the inside.

The cast also included Hunter Parrish (Weeds) as Nella’s boyfriend Owen, Bellamy Young (Scandal) as Nella’s editor Vera and Eric McCormack (Will & Grace) as the company’s top man Richard Wagner.

All 10 episodes premiered in a binge drop on Sept. 13.
