Oshkosh school district proposal would give staff two days off for mental health in February

OSHKOSH – School board members will learn more Wednesday about a proposal to set aside two days in February as mental health days for staff members, potentially canceling classes for those days.

In a memo to the school board, district administrators outlined a plan to use two days, currently built into the calendar as snow days, for mental health days on Feb. 17 and 18. Those days "would allow staff to decompress and recover from burnout" because of the effects of COVID-19, and it would be a one-time change to the calendar.

The proposed change also would mean a reduction to 3.8 days built in for snow days or other inclement weather.

The school board will hear from administrators about the proposed changes during 6 p.m. Wednesday meeting but would not take any action, district spokesperson Katie Nieman said. The earliest the board would decide would be at its next meeting, scheduled for Dec. 15.
