Oshkosh can't-miss events include Warrant at Waterfest, food trucks and fireworks

OSHKOSH - Classic rockers this week and a night of R&B music next week will round out the Waterfest season.

Other events on tap this week include the Oshkosh Seniors Center's Food Truck Friday event and public fireworks shows.

Here are your five can't-miss events happening in the community this week.

1. Classic rock groups to rock Waterfest Aug. 10

This week’s Waterfest show is for classic rock lovers.

Warrant will headline the Aug. 10 show at the Leach Amphitheater, 303 Ceape Ave.

Also performing are Lita Ford and FireHouse.

Warrant is best known for “Heaven” and “Cherry Pie.” Their albums "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich" and "Cherry Pie" both reached double platinum.

Lita Ford found solo success after The Runaways split up. She recorded “Close My Eyes Forever” with Ozzy Osbourne in 1989.

Popular in the early 1990s, FireHouse’s hits include the power ballads “I Live My Life for You,” “Love of a Lifetime” and “When I Look into Your Eyes.”

The last concert of the Waterfest season will be Aug. 17. Headliner is Tower of Power with opening acts Alex McMurray Band with Paul Sanchez and The Pocket Kings.

Gates open at 5:45 p.m. VIP admission is $50. General admission is $20 before 7 p.m. and $25 after. For more information and tickets, visit waterfest.org.

2. Food Truck Friday event benefits Oshkosh seniors

The Oshkosh Seniors Center will host Food Truck Friday from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 11 at South Park.

Blue Collar Blues Band will provide live musical entertainment. Attendees should take chairs and blankets to sit on.

Fifteen food trucks will serve a variety of items, from Mexican to American and Asian to Italian.

Funds raised will benefit the Oshkosh Seniors Center.

3. Volunteer boat captains still needed for veteran event

The Warriors on the Water event, to benefit Wounded Warriors United of Wisconsin, will be 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 12, setting off from Skipper Buds Marina.

Veterans are provided with a morning of fishing the Lake Winnebago System with a host boat captain or guide. The afternoon includes lunch, a silent auction, speakers, on-stage recognition, prizes and more.

Although veteran spots are full, volunteer boat owners willing to host a veteran are still needed. Register at wwuwi.org.

4. PGI hosts public fireworks shows during annual convention

The Pyrotechnics Guild International will host public shows Aug. 13 and 18 at Sunnyview Expo Center, 500 E. County Y. The PGI gathers each year for a week-long convention, this year choosing Oshkosh.

Admission is $10 per person with children 3 and younger admitted free. Tickets must be purchased in advance as tickets will not be sold at the gate. Parking will be $5 cash only per vehicle.

Wristbands can be purchased in person at the Winnebago County Parks Department, 625 E. County Road Y, Suite 500, or Oshkosh CVB, 100 N. Main St., Suite 112. Office hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. Will call tickets may be purchased online at winncoparks.recdesk.com/Community/Program. They will not be mailed to you.

5. Cookie decorating class teaches basics

If you ever wanted to learn the basics of sugar cookie decorating, now is your chance.

“Oh Honey — Cookie Decorating Class” will be Aug. 12. Led by The Frosted Bee, the class will be 5 to 7 p.m. at Copper Hall, 203 Otter Ave.

Participants will practice piping, learn the best ways to decorate and cover the general concepts of the dough and icing. All supplies are provided. Designs include bees, honey pots and bears.
