Oscars So Wet: Rain Encroaches on the Red Carpet
The 92nd Academy Awards are off to a wet start.
Rain was pouring as the red carpet kicked off this afternoon, but that didn’t stop stars from strutting out in their Sunday best.
As news crews captured the evening’s dazzling looks, the Associated Press tweeted a video of Oscars staff members trying to keep camera crews dry despite the downpour.

The Wrap’s Steve Pond also tweeted a video of a staffer sweeping the rain off of the roof of the tent.
“This is my 28th Oscars but I’ve never seen this before,” he wrote.
“So it started raining heavily just as the carpet opened at the #Oscars,” tweeted an ABC News producer, along with a video of rain forming a concerningly large puddle on the roof. “… and it ain’t off to a good start.”

Variety reporter Matt Donnelly also documented the precipitation.
“Staff atop the Dolby Theater are sweeping huge puddles of water down from the Governors Ball build out to the red carpet. Right next to the E! Glambot,” he tweeted along with a video.
The temperature was in the mid-50s in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon, which is considered quite chilly by Angeleno standards. The average temperature in February usually hovers around the high 60s.
According to Los Angeles Times reporter Daniel Miller, this year marks only the 11th time it’s rained on Oscars day since 1945.
“It’s raining at the Academy Awards, the 11th time that’s happened since 1945 and the first instance since 2015. That year, 0.70 inches of rain fell, tied for the wettest #Oscars on record, according to @latimes research from that year,” he wrote, along with an infographic with data from years past.
