Oscars: Entry Deadlines Approach Including For New Best Picture Eligibility Requirements

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is getting serious about its new eligibility requirements for Best Picture consideration. You have until Wednesday, November 15 to comply.

That date is the deadline to submit Oscars Submission Forms (OSF) in the general entry categories and Representation And Inclusion Standards Entry (RAISE) forms for Best Picture consideration for the 96th Academy Awards. AMPAS will not accept the necessary forms after the deadline.

For a feature film to be considered for the 96th Oscars, the film’s distributor or producer must upload via AMPAS’ submission website a scanned, signed copy of the OSF and legal billing (complete on-screen credits). The deadline for submission is 5 p.m. PT on November 15.

While that date is the deadline for credits submission, feature films have until December 31 to open in a commercial motion picture theater in one of the six qualifying U.S. metro areas: Los Angeles County; City of New York [five boroughs]; the Bay Area [counties of San Francisco, Marin, Alameda, San Mateo and Contra Costa]; Chicago [Cook County, IL]; Miami [Miami-Dade County, FL]; and Atlanta [Fulton County, GA] and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days, during which period screenings must occur at least three times daily, with at least one screening beginning between 6-10 p.m. daily, to be eligible for 2023 awards consideration.

Submitting the required confidential Academy Inclusion Standards form and meeting two of the four standards (which were designed to guarantee some level of diversity in the creation of the films allowed to compete for Best Picture) is also required for eligibility in the Best Picture category for the 96th Oscars. A film’s distributor or producer will have the option to opt out of Best Picture consideration but still be eligible in other categories where the new rules don’t apply. The deadline for that submission is also 5 p.m. PT on November 15.

The RAISE platform and OSFs are accessible online. For additional information about RAISE and Best Picture eligibility, email RAISE@oscars.org.

Complete 96th Academy Awards rules can be found here.

Additionally, the last day to upload a film to the “For Your Consideration” section on the Academy Screening Room member-only streaming site is December 19, 2023. Entries in the Animated Feature, Documentary Feature, International Feature and short-film categories are subject to special rules and qualifying criteria; those submission deadlines have already passed.

Nominations for the 96th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2024. The Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and will be televised live on ABC.
