Oscars: 26 Animated Features Submitted for Academy Consideration

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that 26 film have submitted for consideration in this year’s animated feature category.

Top contenders in the category include Pixar’s “Coco” and Warner Animation Group’s “The Lego Batman Movie.” Indie distributor Gkids boasts a whopping seven entries, including “The Breadwinner,” produced by Angelina Jolie.

DreamWorks’ “The Boss Baby” and “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” are in the mix, as well as Illumination’s “Despicable Me 3.”

Embattled distributor The Weinstein Co. appears to have not submitted August release “Leap!,” nor are two Open Road features — “The Nut Job 2: Nutty By Nature” and “Spark: A Space Tail” — on the list.

The submissions are:

“The Big Bad Fox & Other Tales”
“Birdboy: The Forgotten Children”
“The Boss Baby”

“Captain Underpants The First Epic Movie”
“Cars 3”
“Cinderella the Cat”

Depending on the number of films that qualify, two to five nominees may be voted. Sixteen or more films must qualify for the maximum of five nominees to be voted.

Nominations for the 90th Academy Awards will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2018.
