Oscars 2018: Jimmy Kimmel dings President Trump, Mike Pence in opening monologue

Jimmy Kimmel said he wouldn't shy away from touchy issues in his Oscars opening monologue -- and the guy is good for his word.

As expected, Kimmel took swipes at Harvey Weinstein, Fox News and President Trump during his 15-minute opener, but he saved one of his best zingers for Vice President Mike Pence.

Kimmel turned the camera on Best Actor nominee Timothee Chalamet, the 22-year-old breakout star of "Call Me By Your Name." But, Kimmel noted, while the film is highly regarded, the 1980s gay love story didn't make much money at the box office.

"We don't make films like 'Call Me By Your Name for money," Kimmel mused. "We make them to upset Mike Pence."

The comment was met with laughter and applause from the audience -- a bit of a departure from their tense reaction when Kimmel poked at alleged rapist Harvey Weinstein. The crowd seemed unsure if they should applaud at his name when Kimmel noted he'd been booted from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

Kimmel also said the night would likely induce a "tweet-storm from the president's toilet" and joked that since the Oscar statue is 90 years old, "he's probably at home right now watching Fox News."

"Oscar is the most beloved and respected man in Hollywood. Just look at him," Kimmel said. "Keeps his hands where you can see them, never says a rude word, and most importantly, no penis at all. He's literally a statue of limitation."
