The Oscars’ official afterparty, held just upstairs from the Dolby Theatre, welcomed big winners including the Everything Everywhere All at Once team, Sarah Polley and Brendan Fraser, who had their new trophies engraved and posed for photos with their statues, as Ke Huy Quan’s excitement could be contained to the ground as he stood on the engraving station table. Harrison Ford, Angela Bassett, Ariana DeBose, Ava DuVernary, Brian Tyree Henry, Brendan Gleeson, Miles Teller, Riz Ahmed, Seth Rogen, Sigourney Weaver and Troy Kotsur were among those who also stopped by the Governors Ball before heading out to the rest of the party circuit.

Vanity Fair

Hosted once again by editor-in-chief Radhika Jones and held at a custom space next to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, the starry to-do kicked off with an exclusive dinner (for 100 guests) and viewing party that rolled straight through to a packed afterparty. The overall configuration of the event was laid out as a series of indoor and outdoor rooms with an open-air garden courtyard and everywhere one looked, there were clusters of A-list conversations and unexpected pairings. In addition to bites by acclaimed chef Evan Funke (Mother Wolf and his upcoming launch Funke), the party featured In-N-Out burgers, custom Johnnie Walker and Tequila Don Julio bars and lounges, a central round DJ booth and bar presented by Richard Mille and a “Departures Lounge” where guests could snag Rothy’s Flats and Gnarwhal Coffee for the road.

Chanel x Charles Finch

Everyone, everywhere, all at once. That’s how an insider described the scene on Saturday night inside the Beverly Hills Hotel’s Polo Lounge, host of the 14th annual edition of Chanel and Charles Finch’s pre-Oscars dinner and celebration. It’s an apt description as the chic affair always boasts an enviable RSVP list that features Oscar winners and nominees, auteurs and ingenues, artists and designers, producers and bon vivants. And, of course, Chanel muses like Kristen Stewart and Marion Cotillard. One would think that with their respective histories with the house that Stewart and Cotillard are close and that’s exactly what Nicole Kidman suggested when the trio collided amid flashbulbs and hugs on the intimate press line, all wearing Chanel, naturally. But, no, Cotillard said that she and Stewart only recently met at a “private dinner.” They connected like old friends, however, and Kidman and Cotillard also traded brief notes on motherhood.

Other guests seemed to be saying hello for the first time. Oscar winner Ariana DeBose was overheard congratulating Kerry Condon, who is nominated in the category in the category DeBose dominated last year, best supporting actress. “I just said your name today over the loud speaker,” relayed the West Side Story star, referring to rehearsals as she is booked to present an Oscar this year for that category. Meanwhile, the Banshees of Inisherin star told DeBose and Andrew Garfield, who was in the mix, that she was enjoying the wild ride of the weekend along with her brother who had flown in for the festivities from Ireland.

On that note, a Chanel-clad Ava DuVernay told THR that’s one of the reasons she always says yes to the invite from Chanel and Mr. Finch. (Dating back to Gabrielle Chanel, the luxury fashion house has deep roots supporting cinema and the artists and institutions that make or champion it.) “I like this event. I like to be able to sit down and have a proper dinner with folks who are interesting and it’s always feels like a family reunion of sorts because you get to see people in the industry you haven’t seen in a while.” One sight that had people buzzing, but not in a good was, was the seemingly ever-present L.A. rain that drenched the city and forced fashionistas to rethink ensembles. DuVernay offered up gratitude to Chanel for loaning her a coat while Stewart braved the elements and wore a Chanel shorts set that inspired memories of her 2022 Oscars look.

Precipitation be damned, this year’s pre-Oscars social calendar also felt like the first return to pre-pandemic normalcy with an overwhelming number of events. “It’s raging,” Patty Jenkins reported. “I was in Europe a year ago and I’ve never seen such a frenzy of activity. I feel like post-pandemic, we’re all more social than ever.”

Those who also said yes to being social were Creed III family of Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson and Jonathan Majors (celebrating the film’s record-breaking debut), Andrew Garfield, nominee Andrea Riseborough (arriving with A-list manager Jason Weinberg and Karim Saleh),Ted Sarandos and Nicole Avant, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, Brie Larson, Camila Morrone, Danielle Deadwyler, Daniel Kaluuya, Giveon, Hugh Grant, Jared Harris, Jason Clarke, Kyra Sedgwick and Kevin Bacon, Leslie Mann and Judd Apatow, Lily James, Idris Elba, Rita Ora, Riz Ahmed, Sarah Polley, Sigourney Weaver, Tobey Maguire, Vicky Krieps, Derek Blasberg, Darren Aronofsky, Janicza Bravo, Jennifer Meyer, Jeremy O. Harris, Jeremy Kleiner, Jerry Bruckheimer, Kate Young, , Rachel Zoe and many more.

White Lotus star Beatrice Granno took a seat at the piano at one point and reminded everyone of her musical skills playing Mia on the HBO Max hit series. The party’s other accessories included a mariachi band that greeted guests upon arrival, a decadent Polo Lounge dinner and vibes that are unmistakably Chanel. “It’s Chanel, everything they do is always right,” explained Rachel Zoe. “I mean, have you ever known them not to do anything flawlessly?”

Giorgio Armani Pre-Oscars Party Honoring Michelle Yeoh

Giorgio Armani, which reopened its L.A. flagship store last year after a stunning redesign, threw its annual pre-Oscar party on Saturday, March 11, at the location on Rodeo Drive. This year’s party, hosted by Roberta Armani, honored Oscar nominee (and now Oscar winner) Michelle Yeoh, who attended the bash wearing a Giorgio Armani Privé spring/summer 2023 short-sleeved, cropped jacket embroidered in peony pink crystals and paillettes with tulle ruffle accents paired with perfectly tailored black silk velvet trousers. Yeoh caught up at the fete with her Everything Everywhere All At Once co-stars Jamie Lee Curtis, Ke Huy Quan, Stephanie Hsu and Harry Shum Jr.

Brendan Fraser also attended, meaning that Armani had all four of Oscar night 2023’s acting winners in the house.

Elsewhere inside the store — where a DJ spun tunes on the mezzanine level — THR saw John Wick 4’s Shamier Anderson, Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ Ross Butler and Black Adam’s Noah Centineo palling around, while Scream VI’s Mason Gooding hung out with Michael Cimino, who he starred with on Love, Victor. The starry crowd also included Tessa Thompson, Samuel L. Jackson, Allison Williams, Jenny Slate, Thuso Mbedu, Lexi Underwood, Phil Dunster, Lewis Tan, Josh Dallas and Abigail Spencer.

American Cinema Editors’ Invisible Art Visible Artists panel

There was no question who edited Top Gun: Maverick at American Cinema Editors’ Invisible Art Visible Artists pre-Academy Awards program on Saturday. Oscar nominee Eddie Hamilton attended the annual event wearing an authentic hat from Top Gun and a Naval aviator jacket, adorned with patches, including some given to him by various squadrons and other representing different crew departments on the movie such as locations and editorial (this patch has an embroidered aircraft with a trail of film). His jacket also had a patch that said “Trigger,” which Hamilton explained was his “call sign” on the movie. “Everyone on the crew had call signs,” he said, adding that director Joe Kosinski was “Battlestar.”

The event began with a panel of this year’s Oscar nominated editors before students and professionals at the Regal Sherman Oaks Galleria, moderated by Academy Award-nominated editor and ACE president Kevin Tent (and with thanks to Oscar-winner and past ACE president Alan Heim, who led the IAVA panels for the last 18 years).

Each nominee sharing how they got into the business, with Mikkel Nielsen (The Banshees of Inisherin) getting a big laugh when he admitted that he started out as an actor but his small role was cut out of film. He quipped, “That opened my eyes to editing.”

Paul Rogers, editor of Everything Everywhere All at Once, revealed that a scene that was cut from the final movie featured Michelle Yeoh’s Evelyn as a piece of spaghetti. Elvis editors Matt Villa and Jonathan Redmond related that they first worked together as assistants on Moulin Rouge! “He’s a very loyal director,” said Jonathan Redmond of Baz Luhrmann. The pair also talked about the “incredible” star of the film, Austin Butler, with Villa admitting that the performances “could have been cut looking at nothing but Austin.” (Editing nominee Monika Willi of Tár wasn’t in attendance.)

A nominees luncheon with margaritas at Frida Mexican Cuisine, hosted by Motion Picture Editors Guild (Local 700) followed the panel. Speaking of his fellow nominees that he got to know during the season, Rogers summed up, “We’re spread all over the globe, I hope that we continue to find ways to get together after all of this is over.” — Carolyn Giardina

Vanity Fair’s Everything Everywhere All at Once Celebration

On Friday night, the cast and crew of Everything Everywhere All at Once gathered at the Mandarin Oriental Residences in Beverly Hills for an intimate party hosted by Vanity Fair and Richard Mille. After a long and fruitful awards season, the EEAAO team doesn’t seem to be slowing down the celebrations anytime soon, as they prepare for the big night to come.

Nominees Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Stephanie Hsu mingled throughout the party, hugging friends, chatting with well-wishers and snapping selfies. Co-director Daniel Scheinert and producer Jonathan Wang greeted guests in the opening foyer, while cast members Harry Shum Jr. and Jenny Slate were also in attendance. Fellow nominee Jamie Lee Curtis — who recently told The Hollywood Reporter that she prefers to be in bed by 9 p.m. (“Mommy goes to bed early,” the actress said) — was not in attendance.

As the crowd thinned out, the party moved onto the dance floor, where Yeoh, Shum Jr., Scheinert and Thompson danced the rest of the night away — at one point, there was even a conga line. The pre-Oscar party also saw the attendance of celeb guests such as Tessa Thompson, Ben Barnes, Lana Condor and Natalie Morales. — Sydney Odman

WIF Oscar Party

WIF (Women in Film, Los Angeles) celebrated its 16th annual Oscar party on Friday night, honoring the 65 women, in front of and behind the camera, who are nominated for an Academy Award this year. Co-hosted by producer and WIF Board president Emerita Cathy Schulman, as well as CODA‘s Marlee Matlin and Siân Heder, many of this year’s female nominees were in attendance and took part in the event’s tradition of each introducing themselves onstage and gathering for a class photo. Mandy Walker, the Elvis cinematographer who could become the first woman to win that category, received particularly loud cheers when she stepped up to the podium and shots were passed out to the crowd for a toast.

“All of us who live on set know how crucial the sisterhood is between above- and below-the-line women in film,” Schulman said from onstage. “We know that men at the top of their field have countless opportunities to network and get to know each other, but women are still left out.” A starry group of non-nominees were also in attendance, including Lake Bell, Madeline Brewer, Jordana Brewster, Sophia Bush, Barbie Ferreira, Patti Harrison, Christina Hendricks, Brendan Hunt, Dakota Johnson, Li Jun Li and Chloé Zhao.

Versace

Donatella and her Versace team transformed the Pacific Design Center in West Hollywood to present a star-studded runway show for its fall/winter ’23 collection. The event, originally set for Friday, went down Thursday night due to L.A.’s chaotic rainstorm situation. It was a good call, too, as the sun was shining and the stars were out in full force, including Cher, Elton John, Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa, Anne Hathaway, Lil Nas X, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez, Demi Moore with daughter Rumer, Channing Tatum, Pamela Anderson and more. Walking in the show were Naomi Campbell, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner and Emily Ratajkowski.

With an unprecedented number of Oscar nominations for Irish talent and films this year, everyone was celebrating the green wave at the 17th annual Oscar Wilde Awards, held Thursday night — before the rain arrived — at Bad Robot in Santa Monica. “It’s amazing, there are 7 million people on that island, and all of them were nominated and are here tonight,” host J.J. Abrams joked, with Irish actors making up 25 percent of this year’s Academy Awards acting noms.

The Oscar Wilde honorees this year were Irish actresses Kerry Condon, Jessie Buckley and Eve Hewson and An Cailίn Ciúin (The Quiet Girl), the first Irish language film nominated for an Academy Award.

Oscar nominees in attendance included Richard Baneham (Avatar: The Way of Water), Mark Swift and Joel Crawford (Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), Tom Berkeley and Ross White (An Irish Goodbye), Andy Nelson (The Batman) and Charlie Mackesy and Matthew Freud (The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse), as well as co-host Katie McGrath and guests Courtney B. Vance, Terry George, Jim Sheridan, John Conroy, Richard Lovett, Catherine Clinch, Alice Eve, Jim Gianopulos, Sarah Bolger, Mamie Gummer, Rick Famuyiwa, Frankie Shaw and O-T Fagbenle. — Mike Barnes
