Jacob Elordi first came to fam in the 2018 Netflix hit, “The Kissing Booth.” The immense success of the teen romcom spawned two sequels which both achieved #1 on the platform. He followed that up with a role on the HBO Emmy-winning drama “Euphoria.” His sinisterly intoxicating turn as Nate Jacobs left audiences in a steamy conflict between body and mind.

He has supporting roles in two red-hot Oscar contenders this year: “Saltburn” and “Priscilla.” In the former, he plays the object of Barry Keoghan’s character. In the later, he takes on the iconic role of the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis Presley. Sofia Coppola’s film focuses on the marriage between Presley and his teen bride, Priscilla Beaulieu (Cailee Spaeny).

Despite being in the wake of Austin Butler’s Oscar-nominated turn in Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” critics raved about Elordi’s performance:

“A jaw-dropping Jacob Elordi [gives] Austin Butler a run for his money as Elvis” – The Wrap

“Jacob Elordi is a force to be reckoned with” – Consequence

“Elordi makes a terrific Elvis, capturing the King’s powerful charisma and making the performance seem somehow effortless” – NME

“Elordi (best known for HBO’s ‘Euphoria’) is a towering head case of contradictions – the swooning lover and the detestable egoist. When he hurls a chair toward Priscilla, when he feeds her mystery pills, when he blatantly gaslights her regarding his Hollywood affairs, it’s enough to make you want to climb up Elordi’s tree-trunk frame and punch his lights out.”- The Globe and Mail

The film merits a score of 79 on Metacritic, Coppola’s best since her Oscar-winning sophomore feature, “Lost in Translation.” Bill Murray was Oscar nominated for his leading role in that film. Here are five reasons why we think Elordi could reap an Oscar bid too:

He plays a real person, an icon at that. Oscar voters historically have a sweet tooth for actors bringing known figures to life. Think back to 2018 when Sam Rockwell squeezed into this category for his portrayal of George W. Bush in  “Vice.”

He’s virtually a co-lead. This gives him more material than his competitors. It worked for LaKeith Stanfield (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) in 2022.

He has a major role in another Oscar player, “Saltburn, which gives him double the material to be considered for and remembered by. Lucas Hedges’ appearance in “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri” was instrumental in his Supporting Actor bid for “Manchester By The Sea” in 2018.

He’s the It guy of the moment. He’s already got projects in the works with the likes of Paul Schrader and Guillermo Del Toro. Industry buzz was the key to success for Florence Pugh (“Little Women”) earning a surprise supporting nomination in 2020.
