Having trouble predicting who will win Best Supporting Actor at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their first round of predictions, and they say the race is between Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”) and Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”). The other three Oscar nominees are Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”).

As of this writing, a leading 19 out of our 20 Oscar Experts are predicting a victory for Downey: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Eric Deggans (NPR), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Michael Musto (Queerty), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV).

Downey portrays Rear Admiral Lewis Strauss in Christopher Nolan‘s biopic about the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the father of the atomic bomb. The film leads all others this year at the Oscars with a leading 13 nominations: picture, director, adapted screenplay, actor, supporting actor, supporting actress (Emily Blunt), cinematography, costume design, film editing, makeup & hairstyling, production design, score and sound.

And the remaining Oscarologist — Claudia Puig (KPCC) — goes out on a limb in forecasting a victory for Gosling. Greta Gerwig‘s fantasy comedy tells the story of Stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Beach Ken (Ryan Gosling) as they travel to the real world to try to uncover the truth about humanity. Its eight nominations are for picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor, supporting actress (America Ferrera), costume design, production design and song x2 (“I’m Just Ken” and “What Was I Made For”).

Currently at Gold Derby, none of our Experts are predicting wins for the other three Best Supporting Actor nominees: Ruffalo (as the antagonistic Duncan Wedderburn in “Poor Things”), De Niro (as real-life crime boss William King Hale in “Killers of the Flower Moon”) and Brown (as estranged brother Clifford “Cliff” Ellison in “American Fiction”). However, many more awards pundits will soon be chiming in with their Oscar predictions, so that could change in the coming weeks.
