Having trouble predicting what will win Best Score at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Ludwig Goransson (“Oppenheimer”). The other four Academy Award nominees are Robbie Robertson (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Jerskin Fendrix (“Poor Things”), John Williams (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) and Laura Karpman (“American Fiction”).

As of this writing, a leading 23 out of our 25 Oscar Experts predict a victory for “Oppenheimer”: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Claudia Puig (KPCC), Clayton Davis (Variety), Erik Davis (Fandango), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Michael Musto (Queerty), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV).

More from GoldDerby

Goransson is a recent Oscar winner for composing Marvel’s mega-hit “Black Panther” (2018), and he also reaped a nom last year for its sequel “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” (2022). “Oppenheimer,” a biopic about the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, leads all other movies this year with 13 total nominations, including predicted wins for Best Picture and Christopher Nolan for Best Director, so that could give Goransson the edge in the Best Score race.

One other Oscarologist — Keith Simanton (IMDb) — instead believes “Killers of the Flower Moon” will prevail. Robertson passed away in August, mere months before receiving his first-ever Oscar nomination for scoring the Martin Scorsese film about the infamous Osage Nation murders. “Flower Moon” earned 10 notices overall and is perhaps most competitive in the Best Actress race for breakout star Lily Gladstone.

Finally, the last awards pundit — Eric Deggans (NPR) — goes out on a limb for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny” on its sole nomination. Williams already has five Oscars on his mantel, and this marks his third bid for an “Indiana Jones” film after “The Temple of Doom” (1984) and “The Last Crusade” (1989).

Currently at Gold Derby, none of the Experts are predicting a win for the other two Best Score nominees: “Poor Things” by Fendrix and “American Fiction” by Karpman. However, many of our awards pundits will continue to update their Oscar predictions between now and Sunday night, so keep checking back.
