Having trouble predicting what will win Best Costume Design at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and they say the trophy will go to Jacqueline Durran (“Barbie”). The other four Academy Award nominees are Holly Waddington (“Poor Things”), Jacqueline West (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Ellen Mirojnick (“Oppenheimer”), and Janty Yates & Dave Crossman (“Napoleon”).

As of this writing, a leading 16 out of our 27 Oscar Experts predict a victory for “Barbie”: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Claudia Puig (KPCC), Clayton Davis (Variety), Eric Deggans (NPR), Erik Davis (Fandango), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Kevin Polowy (CBR), Michael Musto (Queerty), Peter Travers (ABC), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Scott Mantz (KTLA-TV), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV).

More from GoldDerby

Durran is a two-time Oscar winner in this same category for “Anna Karenina” (2012) and “Little Women” (2019). For “Barbie,” the artisan had to recreate many of the iconic Mattel dolls’ looks as well as turn out new designs for characters both in Barbie World and in the real world. She was recently rewarded with wins at the Critics Choice Awards and the Costume Designers Guild Awards (for Best Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film). In all, Greta Gerwig‘s blockbuster comedy nabbed eight Oscar nominations.

The other 11 Oscarologists instead believe “Poor Things” will prevail: Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Tariq Khan (Gold Derby).

This marks Waddington’s first ever Academy Award nomination. For her work on “Poor Things,” which required designing Victorian era looks and eye-popping frilly dresses for actors like Emma Stone, she has already scooped up prizes at the BAFTA Awards and the Costume Designers Guild Awards (for Best Period Film). Yorgos Lanthimos‘ dark comedy earned 11 total bids this year.

Currently at Gold Derby, none of the Experts are predicting a win for the other three Best Costume Design nominees: “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer” and “Napoleon.” However, many of our awards pundits will continue to update their Oscar predictions between now and Sunday night, so keep checking back.
