Having trouble predicting what will win Best Production Design at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and they are divided between whether “Poor Things” (James Price, Shona Heath & Zsuzsa Mihalek) or “Barbie” (Sarah Greenwood & Katie Spencer) will win. The other three Academy Award nominees are “Oppenheimer” (Ruth De Jong & Claire Kaufman), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (Jack Fisk & Adam Willis) and “Napoleon” (Arthur Max & Elli Griff).

As of this writing, 16 out of our 27 Oscar Experts predict a victory for “Poor Things”: Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Claudia Puig (KPCC), Clayton Davis (Variety), Erik Davis (Fandango), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Scott Mantz (KTLA-TV), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan King (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV). This eye-pleasing film about a woman in Victorian London (played by Emma Stone) who is resurrected through a brain transplant is on an awards hot streak, winning production design races at the Art Directors Guild Awards (for a fantasy film) and at BAFTA. Not so fast, as 10 other Oscarologists instead believe “Barbie” will prevail: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Brian Truitt (USA Today), Eric Deggans (NPR), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Kevin Polowy (CBR), Michael Musto (Queerty), Peter Travers (ABC), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) and Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby. Earlier this awards season, Greta Gerwig‘s box office blockbuster starring Margot Robbie as the classic Mattel doll won Best Production Design at the Critics Choice Awards and with various regional critics’ groups.

And the last awards pundit — Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby) — goes out on a limb for “Oppenheimer.” This acclaimed biopic about the life of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (portrayed by Cillian Murphy) also recently triumphed at the Art Directors Guild Awards (for a period film) thank in part to its recreation of Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Currently at Gold Derby, none of the Experts are predicting a win for the other two Best Production Design nominees: “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon.” However, many of our awards pundits will continue to update their Oscar predictions between now and Sunday night, so keep checking back.
