Orlando Sentinel 2023-24 Arts Season Preview: Opera, Classical & Choral Music

MOVIE MUSIC

In recent years, movie-score concerts — with the movie being simultaneously screened — have become a popular way of enjoying both a favorite film and the sound of a full orchestra. There’s a quartet of such performances coming this season, with movies ranging from a silent-film classic to a recent Disney animated hit.

It has been five years since we heard the singers and musicians of the Bach Festival Society provide a score to “The Passion of Joan of Arc,” a 1928 silent film by Carl Theodor Dreyer. Considered a masterpiece, the movie was scored by composer Richard Einhorn in the style of opera-oratorio in the early 1990s.

The Bach Festival Society will again present Einhorn’s dramatic and passionate music with the accompanying film, “Voices of Light: The Passion of Joan of Arc,” March 15-16, 2024.

While Joan of Arc was a medieval hero, the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra has a more modern hero in mind. Quick! Light the bat signal!

As part of its pop series, the Philharmonic will play Danny Elfman’s score from the 1989 “Batman” film — that’s the one with Michael Keaton as the Caped Crusader and Jack Nicholson as the Joker. Mark Watters will conduct two performances on March 9, 2024, in Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

A slew of heroes can be found in “The Lord of the Rings,” based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy saga of hobbits, elves and a dark lord’s “one ring to bind them.”

Howard Shore’s Oscar- and Grammy-winning score for “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first in director Peter Jackson’s LOTR trilogy, will be performed by the Bach Festival Society orchestra during a screening of the epic adventure in the Dr. Phillips Center’s Walt Disney Theater. The Bach Festival’s adult and youth choirs will lend their voices to the experience, as well. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Jan. 26-27 and 2 p.m. Jan 28. For more information, go to drphillipscenter.org.

Finally, there’s Disney’s charming and emotional “Coco,” the animated feature about a boy (and a dog) who learn about family, tradition, remembrance and love that spans generations during Mexico’s Day of the Dead festivities.

The Dr. Phillips Center will host a touring orchestra that will perform the movie’s exuberant and heartfelt score by Michael Giacchino, as well as the Oscar-winning song “Remember Me” by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, with additional songs co-written by Germaine Franco and Adrian Molina.

The music will be performed by the Orquesta Folclórica Nacional de México.

“Coco in Concert” will take place in the arts center’s Walt Disney Theater at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 26. For more information, go to drphillipscenter.org.

THE SPLENDOR OF BAROQUE MAGNIFICATS: Feb. 9, 2024. Bach Vocal Artists perform magnificats – pieces praising the Virgin Mary – by Telemann, Vivaldi and others.

MORAVEC AND PRICE: Feb. 17-18, 2024. Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell’s oratorio “Sanctuary Road” draws on the stories of William Still’s memoir, “The Underground Railroad.” Florence Price’s Symphony No. 1 was the first symphony by a Black woman to be performed by a major American orchestra.

CONCERTOS BY CANDLELIGHT: Feb. 24, 2024. Pianist Alon Goldstein plays Piano Concerto No. 1. Routa Kroumovitch and Alvaro Gomez perform the Concertante in A Major for Two Violins, Op. 48, by Louis Spohr. Also on the bill: The iconic William Tell Overture.

MAGNIFICAT IN D MAJOR/ARIAS FOR COUNTERTENOR: Feb. 25, 2024. Bach’s Magnificat is followed by his Orchestral Suite. Countertenor Brennan Hall, an Orlando native, sings a selection of Handel’s arias.

LITERARY FOLK SONGS AND FAIRY TALES: Feb. 29, 2024. Program features the Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Little Match Girl Passion.”

ROSSINI AND RICKETTS: March 3, 2024. Rossini’s Stabat Mater, with the world premiere of Ted Ricketts’ “Five Songs of War and Peace,” inspired by wartime writings of Stephen Crane and Walt Whitman.

TOSCA: Oct. 27 & 29. In this classic melodrama, opera diva Floria Tosca becomes caught in political intrigue as she tries to save her lover, a painter named Mario Cavadorossi, from Baron Scarpia, who wants Tosca for himself. Sung in Italian, with English supertitles.

FRIDA: Jan. 26 & 28, 2024. A look at artist Frida Kahlo’s magnetism, from her childhood during the Mexican Revolution to her tempestuous marriage to muralist Diego Rivera to her political, artistic and romantic dalliances. Sung in English and Spanish, with supertitles.

RUSALKA: March 8-9, 2024, at the Art & History Museums — Maitland. Like Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” Antonin Dvorák’s opera tells of a sea creature that falls in love with a human and strikes a deal with a witch — giving up her voice — to pursue him. Sung in English.

LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR: April 19 & 21, 2024. Opera Orlando will use TV’s “Game of Thrones” for inspiration in this staging of Donizetti’s musical masterpiece. Lady Lucia Ashton is torn between her family and forbidden love in this tragedy. Sung in Italian with English supertitles.

THE JUNIPER TREE: May 10-11, 2024, in the Pugh Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center. A tale by the Brothers Grimm comes to life in a collaboration between the opera company, Alterity Chamber Orchestra, MicheLee Puppets, Phantasmagoria, the Central Florida-based atmospheric storytelling troupe. The plot kicks off with a jealous woman who murders her stepson and then makes a stew of him. But revenge can be sweet. Sung in English with English supertitles.
