The Mikaelsons finally returned to New Orleans on Friday’s episode of The Originals. And while it wasn’t the happiest of homecomings, at least they arrived just in time for the circus — even if it was, as Klaus put it, a “circus of sadists.”
Desperate to save Hope from the mysterious evil force skulking around the Big Easy — now known to be the Hollow, a “very angry, very powerful” entity that feeds off human sacrifice — everyone broke off into random pairs, Scooby Doo-style, and launched a full investigation:
* Elijah and Vincent teamed up to
recite Shakespeare shake down Detective Kinney, who finally got a storyline this season… only to get murked towards the end of the hour. But before meeting his untimely demise, he reminded Vincent, “You’re in the middle of everything that’s to come.” (You know, because he didn’t already feel guilty enough about bringing this evil to town.)
* Meanwhile, Hayley and Marcel — two people you could say have never met before, and I’d believe you — followed a Crescent-turned-fanatic deep into the bayou, where a truth bomb was awaiting the King of New Orleans. “It’s not your city to rule!” the wayward wolf told him. “New Orleans belongs to all of us, and the Hollow offered us the power we needed!” (So… this is also kind of Marcel’s fault, too? Interesting.)
* Freya and Keelin formed the episode’s third odd couple, and while they didn’t make out — yet! — they did turn out to be a pretty good team. After breaking into Marcel’s loft and saving Hope, Freya even took back the ring that had previously tethered Keelin to her. “Is this a thank-you or an apology?” she asked, to which Freya replied, “I’m not particularly good at either one.” (The chemistry between these two! I think I need to take a cold shower.)
The group’s investigation eventually led them to a ritualistic circle — eerily reminiscent of Klaus’ curse-breaking ritual in the second season of The Vampire Diaries — where a meal of small, helpless children was being prepared for the Hollow. (Yummers!) Naturally, Klaus and Marcel sprang into action, only to discover that they’d stepped into a trap.
Vincent, as always, found a loophole to rescue the duo from the Hollow’s clutches — Elijah, for the record, was willing to kill the kids in order to break the connection — but the damage had already been done. Klaus and Marcel’s glowing blue eyes in the episode’s final moments proved that the Hollow isn’t done with them yet.
