Mario voice actor Charles Martinent is “stepping back” from the role after three decades, Nintendo announced on Monday via social media. Instead, he will be transitioning to the newly created role of “Mario Ambassador.”

“Charles Martinent has been the original voice of Mario in Nintendo games for a long time, as far back as Super Mario 64,” the statement reads. “Charles is now moving into the brand-new role of Mario Ambassador. With this transition, he will be stepping back from recording character voices for our games, but he’ll continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario and interacting with you all!”

Chipper as always, Martinent confirmed he was setting out on a “new Adventure” with a tweet of his own. Hired by Nintendo in 1991, Martinent made his first appearance as Mario in the CD-ROM version of Mario Teaches Typing. He made his first proper video game appearance as the character with Super Mario 64 in 1996, and went on to expand his repertoire to the voices of Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, Baby Luigi, and Baby Mario.

Though Chris Pratt controversially stepped into the role for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Martinent wasn’t shut out of the film entirely; he voiced Mario and Luigi’s father as well as a Brooklyn citizen named Giuseppe.

In a statement to Polygon, Nintendo confirmed Martinent was not involved in the upcoming Nintendo Switch games Super Mario Bros. Wonder and WarioWare: Move It. No announcement has been made about who will be stepping in as the voice of Mario.
