The past is always a part of the present when it comes to the Jurassic Park franchise, which comes to something of a conclusion this week with the release of Jurassic World Dominion. As the third film in the Jurassic World trilogy, Dominion makes a point of uniting the core cast of the latter-day films (specifically Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard) with the iconic trio featured in Steven Spielberg’s original 1993 masterpiece: Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum.

All three veteran actors return to update us not just on what their characters have been up to over the past several decades, but show how they fit into a world where dinosaurs might literally wander down a suburban street. And they’re not the only Jurassic Park characters to return to the franchise, either, as Dominion really does strive to bring things full circle.

So, in case you were wondering, say, why the original cast is in the new film (for reasons beyond “Universal met their salary demands”), here’s a breakdown of each character and what led them to face off against some thunder lizards one last time.

Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill)

Jurassic World Dominion (Universal)

Last Franchise Appearance Before Dominion: Dr. Grant traveled to Site B, a.k.a. Isla Sorna, in Jurassic Park 3 (after getting conned by two parents trying to rescue their son from the island and its resident dinos).

What Have They Been Doing Since Then? Given that he barely survived the last trip with his life, Alan Grant quite understandably returned to studying dinosaurs in their much less dangerous state of fossilized remains.

How Do They Get Involved in Dominion? If there’s one person who can drag Grant out of retirement, it’s Dr. Ellie Sattler, who visits Grant at his dig site after she herself gets contacted by a blast from the past…

Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern)

Jurassic World Dominion (Universal)

Last Franchise Appearance Before Dominion: While Dr. Sattler didn’t personally make the trip to Isla Sorna in Jurassic Park 3, her brief appearances were key to helping Dr. Grant return safely.

What Have They Been Doing Since Then? Dr. Sattler has continued working as a respected scientist over the decades since her original trip to Jurassic Park, especially given the new worldwide need for paleobotantists. As revealed in Jurassic Park 3, she also has her marriage to a U.S. State Department employee named Mark and two children to keep her busy.

How Do They Get Involved in Dominion? In the chaos of a world where dinosaurs wander free, Dr. Sattler gets contacted by her old friend Dr. Ian Malcom, who invites her to visit him at his new gig.

Dr. Ian Malcom (Jeff Goldblum)

Jurassic World Dominion (Universal)

Last Franchise Appearance Before Dominion: Dr. Ian Malcolm, a two-time survivor of islands with dinosaurs on them, testified to Congress in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom that the continued spread of dinosaurs across the globe could be the cause of humanity’s own extinction. (He’s a fun guy at parties.)

What Have They Been Doing Since Then? As we learn in Jurassic World Dominion, Dr. Malcolm’s expertise as a chaotician has made him a widely-read author of doomsday treatises — which turns out to be a very lucrative skill set, depending on who you can find to pay you for it.

How Do They Get Involved in Dominion? At the beginning of the film, Dr. Malcolm is the in-house philosopher at BioSyn, a bioengineering company that at the beginning of the film has become a world leader in handling the dinosaur problem. (It appears to be a lucrative business model — at least, it’s lucrative enough for the company to be able to have an in-house philosopher on staff.

Dr. Lewis Dodgson (Campbell Scott)

Jurassic World Dominion (Universal)

Last Franchise Appearance Before Dominion: Lewis Dodgson (not “Dodson,” despite what your memory of Wayne Knight’s iconic line delivery might be telling you) was the employee of a rival bioengineering company who paid Dennis Nedry (Knight) to steal dinosaur embryos from InGen. This didn’t work out great for Dennis in the long run — or anyone else on Isla Nublar at the time of the attempted heist, as it was Dennis’s shutdown of the park systems which led to the catastrophic events of Jurassic Park.

(FYI, Dodgson did look a little different at the time, because he was then played by actor Cameron Thor, who went to prison in 2016 for sexually assaulting a minor. Campbell Scott is an upgrade in a lot of ways.)

What Have They Been Doing Since Then? Over the ensuing decades, Dodgson (ugh, it still looks wrong) managed to build up his company, BioSyn, into a major player in the bioengineering space.

How Do They Get Involved in Dominion? With BioSyn making massive strides in the worlds of genetics and dinosaur handling, Dodgson has become a powerful man in the brave new world of Dominion, though the full extent of his plans might only be known by one man…

Dr. Henry Wu (BD Wong)

Jurassic World Dominion (Universal)

Last Franchise Appearance Before Dominion: While Dr. Wu did not appear in The Lost World: Jurassic Park or Jurassic Park 3, he has been a key figure in all three Jurassic World movies — first, as the lead geneticist at the new Jurassic World park on Isla Nublar, then as a geneticist working for Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom.

What Have They Been Doing Since Then? Dr. Wu’s primary pastime appears to be mixing up various combinations of dino DNA to create even more terrifying dinosaurs than the ones nature originally invented. (Dr. Wu, have you considered a different hobby? Frisbee golf is fun. So is doing literally anything else.)

How Do They Get Involved in Dominion? At the beginning of the film, Dr. Wu has transitioned from the designing-even-more-terrifying-dinos-than-usual freelance game to working full time for BioSyn.

What’s Dr. Wu and BioSyn up to? You can find out when Jurassic World Dominion arrives in theaters Friday, June 10th.
