Oregon Ducks announce football coach Dan Lanning's contract details

A day after he was announced as Oregon's football coach, Dan Lanning's contract details were announced.

On Tuesday, The University of Oregon's Executive and Audit Committee of the school's Board of Trustees unanimously approved Lanning's contract for six years and $29.1 million and will through January 2028.

In his first season at Oregon, Lanning will earn $4.6 million, and it will increase $100,000 each of the following five seasons. Oregon says Lanning's compensation ranks fifth among Pac-12 coaches and 27th nationally.

According to USA Today, Stanford's David Shaw makes $8,924,683, while UCLA's Chip Kelly makes $5,600,000 and Utah's Kyle Wittingham receives $5,200,000.

The $4.6 million Lanning is receiving is higher than the $4.4 million base salary Mario Cristobal got under his previous contract before leaving for Miami. However, Lanning is receiving less than the $7 million Cristobal would have gotten if he signed Oregon's reported contract extension.

"I want to give thanks to our athletics team for the great support as we conducted this intense search over five days," Oregon Athletic Director Rob Mullens said. "We received a lot of input from our constituents far and wide.

"We are really pleased to be able to attract someone of the trajectory of Dan Lanning to lead our program. Throughout the negotiations with Dan, we landed on a contract that was similar to the previous contract that we had approved before this group."

If Lanning leaves Oregon, his buyout would be $14 million through Jan. 31, 2023. With time, the amount decreases to $10 million, $7 million, $3 million, $2 million and $1 million.

Lanning will receive win and bowl incentives should he achieve certain yearly marks. If the Ducks play for a College Football Playoff national championship, Lanning will receive an extra $500,000. He will also receive $250,000 if Oregon makes it to the CFP semifinals.

If Oregon makes it to one of the other four New Year's Six bowl games, Lanning will make an extra $150,000. He would get $100,000 if Oregon qualified for any other bowl game where the Ducks win at least seven regular-season games.

Other incentives include winning a national championship: ($500,000), winning a Pac-12 championship ($150,000), winning the Pac-12 North Division ($100,000). Lanning will also receive $100,000 with his ninth regular-season win and an extra $200,000 apiece for wins 10-12 in the regular season.

Lanning will be provided a $100,000 stipend for purposes of covering necessary moving and relocation expenses. He will also be provided up to 90 days of temporary housing for he and his family.

Oregon will also provide Lanning with two courtesy cars.
