Oprah Winfrey named as 2018 Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient

During the Golden Globes 75th Anniversary Special, Morgan Freeman had a very special announcement for Oprah Winfrey. He said, “It is my distinct pleasure to announce that the 2018 Cecil B. DeMille honoree is Oprah Winfrey.”

Oprah is an extremely qualified honoree, considering she received a Golden Globe nomination for her performance in The Color Purple. She also received critical acclaim for her roles in Lee Daniels’s The Butler, as well as Selma.

Oh, yeah, and she spent 25 years owning daytime television with her mega-successful talk show.

But Oprah hasn’t been just a titan of media — she’s also been a titan of philanthropy. In fact this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in South Africa.

And since the award honors recipients for their philanthropic endeavors offscreen, for Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Meher Tatna, the pick was a no-brainer.

She said, “For generations, Oprah has celebrated strong female characters on- and offscreen and has been a role model for women and young girls for decades.”

The Golden Globe Awards airs January 7 at 8 p.m. on NBC.
