In 2009, Irish novelist Colm Tóibín released the best-selling novel Brooklyn, an emotional and heart-wrenching story of a young woman, Eilis, as she immigrates from Ireland to the United States in the ’50s. Years later, in 2015, Saoirse Ronan starred in the movie adaptation of the novel and was even nominated for an Oscar for her role. Fast forward nine years later, the sequel to the novel, titled Long Island, is being recommended by none other than Oprah Winfrey herself.

Winfrey announced her May book club selection on Instagram alongside a video of her introducing the book. “This novel is centered on a woman named Eilis, she is a mother and she’s married and she’s living in a cul-de-sac in Long Island (thus the title!) surrounded by her husband’s large Italian-American family,” Winfrey said, setting the scene.

“And there she is in the story, that is deeply emotional grappling with infidelity, with long-lost love, with secrets and the universal struggle we all have to figure out where we truly belong,” she continued.

Winfrey then explained that while Long Island is part of a series, “you don’t have to have read Brooklyn or watched the movie to appreciate Long Island.” “This novel has everything you need to know in its own completely riveting story,” Winfrey concluded.

“We urge you to get a copy of this novel of heartbreak, second chances, and new beginnings,” Winfrey continued in the caption. “We are so excited to read Colm Tóibín’s latest with you; we have a feeling it will generate some spirited conversation.”

In the official description of the novel, soon-to-be readers get a better idea of what the novel, and its central conflict, are all about. “It is the spring of 1976 and Eilis, now in her forties with two teenage children, has no one to rely on in this still-new country,” the description reads. “Though her ties to Ireland remain stronger than those that hold her to her new land and home, she has not returned in decades.”

“One day, when [her husband] Tony is at his job and Eilis is in her home office doing her accounting, an Irishman comes to the door asking for her by name. He tells her that his wife is pregnant with Tony’s child and that when the baby is born, he will not raise it but instead deposit it on Eilis’s doorstep,” the description details. “It is what Eilis does—and what she refuses to do—in response to this stunning news that makes Tóibín’s novel so riveting.”

With a story this surprising, and with characters many of us know all too well, Long Island is surely a must-read!
