Oprah, Linda Evangelista, Miley Cyrus, Jane Fonda Among 40 “Icons” Featured on Edward Enninful’s Final British Vogue Cover

Edward Enninful marked the end of his nearly-seven-year run as British Vogue‘s editor-in-chief with a cover featuring 40 “icons,” aka illustrious women who’ve graced the pages of the magazine throughout the years, from supermodels to movie stars.

Among those included are Victoria Beckham, Selma Blair, Laverne Cox, Cindy Crawford (accompanied by fellow supermodel daughter Kaia Gerber), Miley Cyrus, Cara Delevingne, Jourdan Dunn, Cynthia Erivo, Linda Evangelista, Jane Fonda, Gigi Hadid, Salma Hayek, Iman, Karlie Kloss, Dua Lipa, Kate Moss (featured alongside daughter Lila Grace Moss), Rina Sawayama, Anya Taylor-Joy, Christy Turlington, Serena Williams and Oprah.

In the cover story, Enninful explained how he pulled off the scheduling feat of this “once-in-a-lifetime farewell shoot.”

He noted that when it came to his final issue, he knew the cover would be dedicated to women. “Women have shaped British Vogue for close to 108 years now and have certainly informed every moment of my six-and-a-half year tenure here, to say nothing of leading and guiding me through my entire life,” he wrote.

As for how the publication’s team decided who to feature on Enninful’s final cover, he shared that it was “clear to all of us on the team that no one woman could or should encapsulate these past few years for the magazine. What we needed was a group, to lean into the power of the collective to bring to life what I hope has been a daring, disruptive and evolutionary period in Vogue‘s history.” He added that the women selected “needed to have reached beyond fashion and culture to change the fabric of society in the 2020s, in ways small and large and always positive.”

Enninful continued, “And so I knew just who I wanted to call. The asks went out. Dozens of them, to many of the women who appeared on the cover of Vogue since my first issue all the way back in the (surprisingly) misty-seeming past of 2017.” At first, he wondered if 40 of the “most booked and blessed women on earth” would make it to the studio shoot in New York in December 2023 to all share the spotlight in one cover. Thankfully, it all worked out, with arrivals from all over the globe.

Going into further detail about the logistics to get these women together at one place and time, Enninful wrote, “Mother and daughter Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford carpooled. Ditto Salma Hayek Pinault and Linda Evangelista, given Salma stayed at Linda’s house the night before. Dua Lipa and Miley Cyrus squeaked in by the skin of their popstar schedules. And everyone made sure things ran smoothly so Gigi Hadid could make it home on time to her toddler.”

And British Vogue shared a video of the photoshoot to prove its illustrious cover models hadn’t been Photoshopped together.

Though Enninful will no longer be editor-in-chief, he will stay at Vogue, transitioning to a new title as the global creative and cultural adviser and editorial adviser.
