'Oppenheimer' was made for IMAX. Here's the only Arizona theater showing it in 70mm

Oppenheimer” is expected to be the bomb.

The star-studded movie starring Cillian Murphy, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Jack Quaid, Devon Bostick and Josh Peck is out now.

The film is exactly 3 hours long and is about the creation of the atomic bomb through the Manhattan Project. It focuses on the life and legacy of its creator, J. Robert Oppenheimer.

You may be wondering what the best way to see this explosive film is.

So, grab your popcorn and soda, recline your seat and relax. Here’s the only place in Arizona where you can see "Oppenheimer" the way writer, director and producer Christopher Nolan intended: on a 70mm IMAX screen.

Is 'Oppenheimer' worth seeing in IMAX?

According to The Associated Press, "Oppenheimer" was made by Universal Pictures for IMAX 70mm and IMAX digital.

“The sharpness and the clarity and the depth of the image is unparalleled,” Nolan said to the AP. “The headline, for me, is by shooting on IMAX 70mm film, you’re really letting the screen disappear. You’re getting a feeling of 3D without the glasses.”

Nolan said that shooting in IMAX 70mm film fills the peripheral vision of the audience, truly immersing them in the film.

In order to create this 70mm projection, the movie was originally filmed on IMAX 65mm and Panavision 65mm. This extra 5mm space was saved for the soundtrack.

He said, the “best possible experience” to view the movie is through IMAX 70mm.

Where can I see 'Oppenheimer' in IMAX in Arizona?

The only 70mm IMAX screen in Arizona is a the Harkins Theatres at Arizona Mills, 5000 S. Arizona Mills Circle, Tempe.

The Arizona Mills IMAX theater is one of 19 70mm IMAX screens in the country and one of 30 in the world.

How do I get tickets to 'Oppenheimer' in IMAX?

You’re in luck: A few tickets are still available for the opening weekend of "Oppenheimer" at the Harkins IMAX in Tempe.

Showings with wheelchair space only include 2:30, 6:30 and 10:30 p.m. Friday, 10:30 a.m. and 10:30 p.m. Saturday and 10:30 a.m., 2:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday.

At publication time, the only showing this weekend with regular seats available was 10:30 p.m. Sunday in the front two rows.

A lot more seats are available throughout next week and can be purchased online at Harkins.com. Adult ticket prices start at $16.50. Cheaper options are available for children ages 3-13 and adults 60 and older.
