Oppenheimer has now crossed the $900 million mark at the global box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing films of 2023.

Christopher Nolan's World War II biopic about theoretical physicist and Manhattan Project scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer earned another $12.8 million over the weekend, including $10.7 million from foreign markets and $2.1 million from domestically, according to Box Office Mojo.

“For Oppenheimer to cross the $900 million global mark after just nine weeks in theaters is a remarkable achievement,” senior Comscore analyst Paul Dergarabedian said, per Variety. “It shows how an amazing film with a superstar director and a star-studded cast can turn a three-hour historical epic into a blockbuster mainstream hit.”

As of Monday, the film has grossed $912,701,115, surpassing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with Barbie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie in first and second place, respectively — both grossing more than $1 billion worldwide.

Among the movies released in North America this year, Oppenheimer ranks fifth in terms of gross earnings. The top two spots — occupied by Barbie and Super Mario Bros. — are followed by Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and the Guardians trilogy.

“Those last few miles of any theatrical run are the toughest,” Dergarabedian added, per Variety. “But at this point, […] it’s a total winner no matter the ultimate outcome.”

The fan-coined "Barbenheimer" phenomenon was born on July 21 when Oppenheimer and Barbie hit theaters with the best single weekend at the box office of this year, according to Box Office Mojo. Oppenheimer raked in $82.4 million and propelled AMC Theatres — the nation’s largest movie theater chain — to its highest weekly admissions revenue in the company’s history.

Without adjusting for inflation, the film is Nolan’s most lucrative global release since 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, which surpassed the global $1 billion threshold.
