Open Mic and CoffeeHouse event set for May 3 at Headwaters

Apr. 28—BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts

will host an Open Mic and CoffeeHouse featuring Tiny Town at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 3, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.

Tiny Town is one of Bemidji's newest cover bands composed of seasoned, sought-after musicians from The Occasionals, Count Beltrami, Mudsong and more, a release said.

The band's styles range from pop to folk to jazz, covering whoever suits their eclectic, syncopated, soulful musical tastes.

Tiny Town began by circumstance in the fall of '22 when singer McKayla Syverson and pianist Dan Will invited multi-instrumentalist Aaron Schnackenberg to play drums at a low-key fundraiser gig. Aaron's brother Daniel Schnackenberg happened to be at the show with a bass and thus the band was born.

The band is currently focused on its eclectic mix of well-known and unknown covers, as well as its own original songs, and will be staying as busy in the northern Minnesota music scene as the members' day jobs allow, the release said.

Tiny Town is tight, soulful and funky, with wide musical roots and tastes. The band is sure to leave you with a funk-and-wiggle or two along their jazzy-inspired grooves, added the release.

Held on the first Friday of most months, the Headwaters Open Mic offers a welcoming and supportive community for musicians and spoken-word performers. All ages and skill levels are encouraged to sign up for a 10 to 15-minute set.

Sign-up begins at 6:30 p.m. or by email to

Admission is $4 per person and $10 for families. Coffee and treats will be available for purchase courtesy of Apple Blossom Village in partnership with Starbucks.
