Open Mic and CoffeeHouse event set for April 5 at Headwaters

Mar. 27—BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts

will host an Open Mic and CoffeeHouse featuring P2 at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.

P2 is the musical collaboration of Prabin Lama on vocals and guitar and Pete McDonnell on percussion, two Bemidji State professors who met over a shared love of music in the campus library, a release said.

A native of Katmandu, Nepal, Lama found his voice singing with friends at his Indian boarding school. As an undergraduate in New Dehli, where the music of Dylan, Lennon and the American '60s scene was in full force, Lama developed his talents over countless open mics with friends and local musicians before moving to the U.S. to further his education.

McDonnell, who hails from Chicago, found his niche as a drumming librarian. He learned rock drumming from his college roommates and eventually branched off into varied percussion styles. The drummer for Bemidji's Mudsong, McDonnell facilitates drum circles and other community-based rhythm events, the release said.

Held on the first Friday of most months, the Headwaters Open Mic offers a welcoming and supportive community for musicians and spoken-word performers. All ages and skill levels are encouraged to sign up for a 10 to 15-minute set.

Sign-up begins at 6:30 p.m. or by email to

Admission is $4 per person and $10 for families. Coffee and treats will be available for purchase courtesy of Apple Blossom Village in partnership with Starbucks.
