Hulu’s hit series “Only Murders in the Building” is gearing up for its third round of Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations, particularly after its sold-out FYC event for guild members on Thursday, December 14. Judd Apatow moderated the hilarious Q&A at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures with panelists Steve Martin, Selena Gomez, Martin Short, Michael Cyril Creighton, Da’Vine Joy Randolph and showrunner John Hoffman. Will the cast finally win the comedy ensemble prize on its third try?

Season 3 streamed from August to October, entertaining audiences week after week during the actors’ strike and writers’ strike. The guest star roster for this murder-on-Broadway-themed season is a who’s-who of Hollywood, with big names including Paul Rudd, Meryl Streep, Linda Emond, Ashley Park, Jeremy Shamos, Wesley Taylor, Jesse Williams, Tina Fey, Jackie Hoffman, Andrea Martin and Jane Lynch.

SEERay Richmond: Are we appreciating Meryl Streep as much as we should?

The story begins with the death of leading man Ben Glenroy (Rudd), who survives a poisoning on his play’s opening night only to be pushed down an elevator shaft at the Arconia. It’s then up to our three main podcasters, Charles-Haden Savage (Martin), Oliver Putnam (Short) and Mabel Mora (Gomez), to investigate his murder, which leads them to question cast members and producers of the play-turned-musical.

“Only Murders in the Building” broke through in 2021 with three SAG Award nominations — comedy ensemble and comedy actor for both Martin and Short — and it matched those same three bids in 2022. It was bested by “Ted Lasso” and that show’s star Jason Sudeikis the first time around, and by “Abbott Elementary” and Jeremy Allen White (“The Bear”) last year. At the Emmy Awards, “Only Murders” has reaped 28 total nominations and won three trophies for guest actor Nathan Lane, sound mixing and production design.

Sometimes it takes a few years for SAG Awards voters to finally anoint the cast of a television show. For comedies, it took “Frasier” a whopping six times to prevail (1999), while “Veep” won on its fifth try (2017), and “Everybody Loves Raymond” claimed victory on its fourth at-bat (2002). Over on the drama side, “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” won on its fourth bid (2004), “Breaking Bad” on its third nom (2013), and “The Crown” on its third and fourth citations (2019 and 2020). In other words, just because the “Only Murders in the Building” cast hasn’t won yet, doesn’t mean you should count them out.

According to Gold Derby odds, “Only Murders” will receive its third consecutive ensemble nomination at this year’s SAG Awards, and it’ll be joined in the lineup by “The Bear,” “Ted Lasso,” “Abbott Elementary” and “Jury Duty.” On Monday, the Hulu hit scored a whopping five Golden Globe nominations (comedy series, comedy actor for Martin and Short, comedy actress for Gomez and supporting actress for Streep), tying it with “The Bear” for the most bids of any laffer.

Will the third time be the charm for the “Only Murders in the Building” ensemble at the SAG Awards? If the audience reactions at Thursday’s Academy Museum screening are any indication, there is major love for this group of actors. Watch a video clip below:
